CAA Indoor Track & Field Weekly Awards – Dec. 5

RICHMOND, Va. (Dec. 5, 2023) – The CAA has announced its first indoor track and field weekly awards for the 2023-24 season. Towson swept the women’s honors, with junior sprinter Cristal Cuervo earning CAA Track Athlete of the Week and sophomore Manie Mevo taking home CAA Field Athlete of the Week. North Carolina A&T claimed both men’s awards as senior sprinter Caleb Jackson was named CAA Track Athlete of the Week, and junior thrower Carlos Alexander received CAA Field Athlete of the Week recognition. 
 
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Cristal Cuervo, Towson
Junior | Sprints | Panama City, Panama / Colegio Saint Mary
Cuervo opened the season with a school record in the 200m, running 24.00 to win the event at the Navy Invitational. The mark ranked first in the CAA throughout the opening week of the 2023-24 season and was the second-fastest in the NCAA. In addition, Cuervo participated on the TU 4x400m relay team, helping the Tigers to a fourth-place finish. Their time of 3:53.42 ranks second in the conference and 20th nationally.  
 
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Manie Mevo, Towson
Sophomore | Jumps / Sprints | Gaithersburg, Md. / Quince Orchard HS
Mevo broke the Towson program record in the triple jump, starting the year with a victory at the Navy Invitational. The sophomore leaped 12.46m (40-10.50), which ranks first in the CAA and fourth in the NCAA after the weekend. Mevo also competed in the long jump, taking fourth with an indoor personal record of 5.65m (18-06.50). 
 
MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Caleb Jackson, North Carolina A&T
Senior | Sprints | Pleasant Grove, Ala. / Pleasant Grove 
Jackson opened the year with a victory in the 60m dash at the Winston-Salem College Kick-Off. The senior sprinter ran 6.74 in the finals to take the crown, bettering his top qualifying time of 6.80. It marks the best time in the CAA this season and is the fourth-fastest in the NCAA. In addition, Jackson helped the A&T 4x400m relay team to a season-opening victory. The Aggies posted a time of 3:20.51 on the flat 200m oval at the JDL Fast Track, which would rank first in the CAA and eighth in the NCAA converted. 
 
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Carlos Alexander, North Carolina A&T
Junior | Throws | Henrico, Va. / Hermitage
Alexander earned a pair of top-10 finishes at the Winston-Salem College Kick-Off. The junior throw placed third in the shot put with an indoor PR of 16.60m (54-05.50). The mark was the best in the CAA this weekend and ranks 25th in the NCAA. He also competed in the weight throw, finishing ninth (15.53m) in the event.
