RICHMOND, Va. (February 14, 2023) – The CAA announced its weekly award winners in men’s and women’s tennis. Honored on the men’s side were Elon freshman
Oskar Antinheimo and the Hofstra team of sophomores
Matthew Garcia and
Josh Reynolds. Selected on the women’s side were Elon senior
Sibel Tanik and the William & Mary duo of grad student
Sofiya Kuzina and sophomore
Ine Stange.
CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Oskar Antinheimo, Fr., Elon (Helsinki, Finland)
Antinheimo recorded a pair of impressive singles victories in Elon’s road matches at Campbell and #12 North Carolina. Playing at the No. 6 spot, the freshman edged Campbell’s Gustavs Lukstins, 6-4, 7-6 (3) to tie the match at 3-3 in the Phoenix’s 4-3 triumph. He moved up to the No. 5 slot against the nationally ranked Tar Heels and battled past Anuj Watane, 3-6, 6-3, 1-0 (10-4) for Elon’s lone point. It was the team-best fourth singles win of the season for Antinheimo.
CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Matthew Garcia, So., Hofstra (Muntinlupa, Philippines)
Josh Reynolds, So., Hofstra (Surrey, United Kingdom)
Garcia and Reynolds went 2-0 at No. 2 doubles to help Hofstra post team victories over Quinnipiac (4-3) and LIU (4-0) last weekend. The Pride duo beat QU’s Ayato Arakaki and Donovan Brown, 6-3, and topped LIU’s Gui Medeiros and Ales D’Anna, 6-2. Garcia also contributed a pair of singles victories over the weekend and Reynolds won his lone singles match against QU.
CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Sibel Tanik, Sr., Elon (Raleigh, N.C.)
Tanik extended her winning streak to five at No. 1 singles with a 2-0 week. The Elon senior outlasted Clemson’s Eleni Louka, 6-0, 5-7, 12-10 to tally the Phoenix’s lone point against the Tigers. It was Louka’s first loss in a dual match this spring. In a 6-1 triumph over Gardner-Webb, she clinched the match by beating the Bulldogs’ Manon Delsol, 6-1, 6-4.
CAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Sofiya Kuzina, Gr., William & Mary (Moscow, Russia)
Ine Stange, So., William & Mary (Oslo, Norway)
Kuzina and Stange didn’t drop a game in a pair of dominant performances at No. 3 doubles as William & Mary defeated CAA foe Towson (7-0) and Morgan State (7-0) last weekend. The Tribe tandem blanked Towson’s Sania Suchinsky and Nadeen Shrebati, 6-0, and beat MSU’s Anabel Aran and Ana-Lei Kalawe, 6-0, to improve to 3-0 on the season.
