RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 16, 2023) – Season openers in baseball and softball and seven matchups with top-25 opponents highlight the Presidents’ Day weekend schedule in the CAA.
Baseball
The first pitch of the 2023 CAA baseball season takes place on Friday with all 11 teams in action and the schedule features some sensational matchups. Delaware visits 4th-ranked Ole Miss for a three-game set (SECN+), while Charleston entertains No. 14 Virginia Tech for three games (FloBaseball). UNCW meets No. 19 Virginia on Sunday as part of the Hughes Bros. Challenge (FloBaseball) and Elon hosts SEC member Kentucky in a weekend series (FloBaseball). Northeastern travels to defending SoCon champ UNCG and William & Mary faces a Mercer team coming off a 40-win campaign. Weekend Schedule
Softball
Three teams will make their season debuts this weekend, headlined by Hofstra heading to the Houston Classic, where the Pride will have a pair of games against No. 12 Washington. Also opening the spring, Drexel heads to Coastal Carolina for the Battle at the Beach, and Towson, who was washed out last weekend, travels to Furman Invitational looking for better luck with the weather. In addition, three conference teams will host home invitationals. Charleston opened the season on Wednesday after its season-opening tournament was cancelled. The Cougars will try again this weekend, hosting the Cougar Classic. Elon is at home for the second straight weekend, highlighted by a matchup with Michigan State (2:30 p.m.) on Friday and former CAA rival James Madison (5 p.m., FloSoftball) on Sunday. The Lady Pirates will also be at home, playing on their diamond for the first time this spring, hosting the NSU-Hampton Classic. |

Men’s Lacrosse
All eight CAA men’s lacrosse teams will be in action this weekend, with three making their season debuts. Four games begin Saturday at noon, including Delaware, who improved to 2-0 with a win over Mount St. Mary’s on Wednesday, playing host to St. John’s (FloLive). Towson, who won its season opener, will also be at home, entertaining No. 17 Saint Joseph’s (FloLive). In addition, the conference’s two Long Island teams will hit the road for tests against Big Ten opponents. Hofstra will visit Michigan (B1G+), while Stony Brook heads to Penn State (B1G+). At 1 p.m., Drexel opens its 2023 season, hosting UMBC (FloLive), and Fairfield remains on the road, looking for its first win of the year against Wagner. Monmouth begins its CAA tenure against a top-five adversary, visiting No. 5 Princeton (ESPN+) at 3 p.m. The final contest this weekend features another CAA newcomer making its league debut. Women’s Lacrosse
Five CAA schools are in action this weekend with two facing ranked teams. Friday’s lone game sees the debut as a CAA member for No. 6 Stony Brook, which hosts No. 17 Michigan (4 p.m., FloLive). Saturday’s slate gets an early start with Monmouth hosting Navy (10 a.m., FloLive), while Elon welcomes in VCU (12 p.m., FloLive) in the day’s other home game. Two teams hit the road for their toughest challenges so far this season, with Hofstra visiting No. 25 Vanderbilt (1 p.m., ESPN+) and Drexel heading out on I-80 to face a Penn State team it ousted from the top 25 last year in Philadelphia (3 p.m., BTN+). |
Weekend Schedule
Indoor Track & Field
Five teams will compete over the weekend, making their final tune-ups for the inaugural CAA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championships less than a week away. Elon will compete in the JDL DMR Invitational in Winston-Salem, N.C., Monmouth will participate in the Garden State Track Club Invitational on Staten Island, UNCW will send athletes to the US Track & Field Indoor Championships in Albuquerque, N.M., Towson heads to University Park, Pa. for the Penn State Tune-Up and William & Mary travels to Annapolis, Md. for the Navy Select.
Tennis
Ten of the league’s 11 women’s tennis teams hit the court this weekend. Monmouth plays its first CAA match as it hosts Delaware on Sunday afternoon. The Blue Hens also host St. John’s and the Hawks visit Loyola. Other matches on the slate see William & Mary and Towson at Big Ten member Maryland on Saturday, while Charleston welcomes Kennesaw State and Georgia Southern. Drexel is at Fairfield and UConn, Hampton heads to East Carolina, Hofstra goes to Marist, Stony Brook takes on UConn and Quinnipiac and North Carolina A&T starts its season against North Carolina Wesleyan and Mount Olive.
Six men’s teams are at home this weekend. Elon and UNCW both face Georgia State, while William & Mary renews its rivalry with Old Dominion. Charleston entertains Campbell, Delaware welcomes Fairleigh Dickinson and Monmouth takes on Queens. Drexel is on the road at NJIT and Hampton makes the short trip to Christopher Newport.
Golf
After some impressive performances to begin the season, it will be a light week on the golf schedule. On the women’s side, Delaware opens its season in Georgia at Mercer’s Reynolds Lake Oconee Invite. UNCW’s men’s squad will also be in action at the John Burns Intercollegiate in Hawaii.
