Northeastern Women & Monmouth Men Lead After Day One of CAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Feb. 22, 2023) – The first day of the inaugural CAA Men’s and Women’s Indoor Track & Field Championship concluded with the Northeastern women and Monmouth men taking the lead in the team standings.
On the women’s side, Northeastern won four events, taking home gold in the pentathlon, weight throw, 5000m final and distance medley relay, with a total of six all-conference performances to total 57 points. Elon, two-time defending CAA Outdoor Champion, sits in second with 38.5 points, while Delaware is two points ahead of Hampton in third with 28 points.
The Monmouth men claimed a victory in the pole vault and tallied four top-three finishes, accumulating 51 total points. Northeastern, which has been dominant outdoors, is in second with 40 points, followed by Stony Brook in third with 30.
Men’s Pole Vault
Dalton Yeust broke the Monmouth program record in the pole vault for the second straight meet and became the first man to clear 5.00m at the CAA Championships since 2016. Energized by a rowdy cheering section, Yeust cleared 5.10m (16-08.75) to take home the gold. His teammate Connor Bennett took second on misses as he and Max Zuckerman of Northeastern cleared 4.65m (15-03.00).
Women’s Pole Vault
Lucy Lieger won the women’s pole vault to take home the first gold medal for Charleston, Indoor or Outdoor, since 2016. Lieger cleared 3.80m (12-05.50) to win the event, while Bridget Joyce of Delaware and Olesya Sitkowski cleared 3.70m (12-05.50) to finish second and third, respectively. Joyce won the tiebreaker by clearing 3.60m on her first attempt, while Sitkowski was over 3.60m on her third try.
Women’s Pentathlon
Two-time CAA Heptathlon Champion and CAA meet record holder Dominique Biron of Northeastern won the pentathlon, with the Huskies claiming the top two spots in the event. Biron, four points shy of her personal record, tallied 4,109 points across the five events to win gold. Her teammate Kennedee Cox won the silver medal with a personal-best 3,671 points, and Elon’s Kalli’Ana Botelho claimed the bronze medal, also setting a lifetime best with 3,528 points.
Men’s Weight Throw
The first medals of the competition were awarded in the men’s weight throw as Northeastern sophomore Nicholas Pisciotta recorded a season-best mark of 17.84m (58-06.50) to take gold. Pisciotta, the 2022 outdoor champion in the hammer throw, finished ahead of Monmouth’s Mujeeb Ali in second (17.72m), and Qualiar Nelson of North Carolina A&T rounded out the podium finishers in third (17.52m).
Women’s Weight Throw
Gianna Rao, the favorite in the women’s weight throw, collected gold with a mark of 20.42m (67-00.00) as Northeastern swept the top spot on the podium for both genders. Delaware’s Chioma Njoku placed second (19.35m), and Towson’s Fatimah Owens took third (18.61m) to round out the medalists.
Men’s Long Jump
Hampton took the top two spots in the men’s long jump. Otis Slayton, who recorded three jumps of over 7.00m, won the event with a leap of 7.11m (23-04.00). His teammate Abraham Evans finished second with a season-best mark of 7.04m (23-01.25). Aeneas Reed of North Carolina A&T was third (6.89m), joining the Pirate duo on the podium.
Women’s Long Jump
The 2022 CAA Outdoor Long Jump Champion, Courtney Lines of UNCW, popped a personal-best 6.38m (20-11.25) to take gold in the event indoors. The mark currently ranks 15th in the NCAA this season, and topped the field by over half a meter. Hampton’s Amira Aduma took second (5.87m), followed closely by Dominique Biron of Northeastern (5.85m), who was on the podium for the second time today.
Women’s 5000 Meters
The 2023 CAA Cross Country Individual Champion, Abigail Hassman of Northeastern, added to her trophy case with a victory in the 5000m. Hassman finished in a time of 16:48.51 to beat out the field. Fiona McLoughlin of Stony Brook was in second with a time of 16:56.14, while Delaware’s Autumn Sands (17:01.09) rounded out the podium finishers thanks to a lean at the tape.
Men’s 5000 Meters
Stony Brook went 1-2 in the men’s 5000m, with Carlos Santos winning gold with a time of 14:09.28. Shane Henderson followed, posting a mark of 14:11.23, while Abraham Longosiwa got Hofstra on the board with a third-place finish at 14:13.57.
Women’s Distance Medley Relay
Northeastern capped off its day one lead with a victory in the women’s distance medley relay. The Huskies squad of Sarah Petersen, Anna Davis, Ava Duggan and Vivian McMahon won the day’s final event with a time of 11:38.58. William & Mary finished next in second (11:42.72), and Stony Brook rounded out the top three (11:48.14).
Men’s Distance Medley Relay
In the final event of the evening, Northeastern made it a clean sweep of the distance medley relay, as the team of Anders Narita, Pierre Sylvain, Ryan Dailor, and Benjamin Godish won the men’s DMR with a time. Monmouth (10:04.97) finished with silver in the event, and William & Mary (10:13.24) brought home the bronze.
