Records Continue To Fall On Day 2 Of CAA Swimming And Diving Championships

HAMPTON, Va. (February 23, 2023) – Records continued to fall on Day 2 of the 2023 CAA Men’s and Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship, with four all-time marks and two championship marks going down at the Hampton Aquaplex on Thursday night.

Defending champion UNCW maintained its lead in the men’s team competition. The Seahawks finished Day 2 with 291 points, followed by second-place Towson with 233 points and third-place Delaware with 223 points. Drexel is in fourth (205), followed by William & Mary (132.5) and Monmouth (95.5).
In the women’s team competition, UNCW took over the top spot with 282.5 points. Northeastern moved into second with 214 points and Delaware is third with 201 points. William & Mary is fourth (198.5), followed by Towson (147), Drexel (133), Monmouth (77) and Stony Brook (75).

Women’s 500 Yard Freestyle

UNCW junior Brooke Knisely captured the 500 free for the second year in a row with a dominant performance, posting a time of 4:46.59 to win the event by nearly five seconds. Seahawks’ teammate Georgia Watkins placed second with a time of 4:51.45 and William & Mary’s Elizabeth Intihar finished third in 4:51.51.

Men’s 500 Yard Freestyle

UNCW sophomore Sam O’Brien broke a 32-year old CAA all-time record in the 500 free, touching the wall in 4:19.02 to win the event for the second straight year. O’Brien broke the CAA all-time mark of 4:19.61 set by American’s Sergio Lopez in 1991 and shattered the CAA meet record of 4:21.42 set by George Mason’s Tom Koucheravy in 2007. Delaware took the next two spots with Andrew Taylor finishing second in 4:22.41 and Blue Hens’ teammate Gavin Currie placing third in 4:24.44.

Women’s 200 Yard Individual Medley

Delaware’s Mira Selling turned in a record-setting effort to win her second consecutive 200 individual medley. The senior finished in 1:58.08, breaking the CAA meet record of 1:58.24 set by George Mason’s Ashley Danner in 2012. Second place went to William & Mary freshman Sophia Heilen in a time of 1:59.30 and Delaware junior Erin Shema was third in 1:59.99.

Men’s 200 Yard Individual Medley

Towson’s Brian Benzing set a new CAA all-time and meet record in the 200 individual medley with a time of 1:44.41. The junior topped the all-time mark of 1:44.97 set by Towson’s Jack Saunderson in 2019 and the meet record of 1:45.29 set by UNCW’s Jacob Duracinsky earlier this morning in the prelims. Two-time defending champion Henderson Louviere of UNCW placed second with a time of 1:45.12 and third place went to Duracinsky in 1:46:07.  

Women’s 50 Yard Freestyle

Northeastern junior Jamie Koo broke the CAA meet record in the 50 free, touching the wall in 22.21 to top the mark of 22:26 set a year ago by William & Mary’s Missy Cundiff. UNCW’s Sarah Olson finished second with a time of 22.46 and placing third with a time of 22.67 was William & Mary’s Katie Stevenson.

Men’s 50 Yard Freestyle

In the closest race of the night, Towson senior Michael Fazio captured the 50 free for the second year in a row with a time of 19.91. The next two spots were just one-hundredth of a second behind as UNCW’s Noah Sipowski finished second in 19.92 and UNCW’s E’Likai Crompton-English placed third in 19.93.

Women’s 3-Meter Diving

UNCW senior Courtney Klausen claimed the 3-meter diving championship for the second straight year with a score of 290.35. Close behind in second was Northeastern’s Erin Murphy with a score of 289.25 and finishing third with a score of 276.40 was Northeastern’s Lauren O’Sullivan.

Women’s 400 Yard Medley Relay

William & Mary set a CAA all-time and meet record in the women’s 400 medley relay as the team of Kat Vanbourgondien, Ellie Scherer, Sophia Heilen and Katie Stevenson posted a winning time of 3:36.15, besting the mark of 3:38.32 also set by William & Mary in 2016. Delaware placed second in a time of 3:38.54 and Northeastern was third with a time of 3:38.78.

Men’s 400 Yard Medley Relay

Delaware broke the CAA all-time and meet record in the men’s 400 medley relay as the team of Gavin Currie, Toni Sabev, Simeon Sabev and Miguel Vasquez recorded a winning time of 3:07.92, topping the mark of 3:09.89 set by William & Mary in 2020. It was the first time the Blue Hens have ever won the event at the CAA Championship. Second place went to UNCW in a time of 3:09.64 and Towson finished third in 3:10.78.
