Elon Wins Inaugural Women’s CAA Indoor Track & Field Championship

CHAMPIONSHIP CENTRAL | RESULTS | HIGHLIGHTS 

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Feb. 23, 2023)
– The Elon women’s track and field program turned out a total team effort to win the inaugural Women’s CAA Indoor Track and Field Championship title. The Phoenix has won back-to-back Outdoor CAA team titles, and now etch its name in the Indoor record books.
 
Elon scored in all 18 events, with Jette Beerman collecting the team’s lone gold medal in the women’s mile, to total 129.83 points. The Phoenix edged Hampton in second place as the Lady Pirates tallied 121.33 points, while Northeastern finished third in the women’s team standings with 93 points. 
 
Jada Griffin of North Carolina A&T was the leading individual point scorer for the women and garnered CAA Most Outstanding Track Performer of the meet. Griffin won the 400m, finished second in the 200m and scored in the 60m, placing seventh. In addition, Griffin was on the North Carolina A&T winning 4x400m relay squad. 
 
Dominique Biron of Northeastern added to her collection of CAA accolades, winning the meet’s Most Outstanding Field Performer award. Biron won the pentathlon yesterday and finished third in the long jump before coming back to place third in the high jump on Thursday. 
 
Women’s Mile
Four Phoenix women scored in the mile, taking home a big 24 points in the event towards the team standings. Beerman won gold with a time of 4:56.32, narrowly edging Ashley Navarro (4:56.57) of Monmouth at the tape. Anna Twomey joined her teammate on the podium with a third-place finish, running 4:58.54 for Elon. 
 
Women’s 60 Meter Hurdles 
The women’s 60m hurdles was one of the tightest races of the day, with the top seven competitors separated by three-tenths of a second. Lucheyona Weaver of North Carolina A&T won the event with a time of 8.40, edging Hampton’s Maya Seay by two one-thousandths of a second, who ran a personal-best 8.42. Jaydea Carter also represented Hampton on the podium, taking third with a time of 8.58.
 
Women’s 400 Meters
Griffin of North Carolina A&T ran away with the women’s 400m, posting a winning time of 53.47. Piper Jons, who set a personal record and broke an Elon program record for the second straight day, took second in a time of 54.28. Dejah Grant from Hampton rounded out the podium finishers with a personal-best time of 54.88.  
 
Women’s Triple Jump 
UNCW’s Jayda Hunter, the 2022 CAA Outdoor Triple Jump Champion, won the event indoors in 2023, recording a personal-best jump of 12.42m (40-09.00). Hunter finished ahead of a Hampton duo as Dieusi Armand was second with a mark of 12.35m (40-06.25), and Jazlyn Jefferson took third, jumping 12.24m (40-02.00). 
 
Women’s 60 Meters 
Aja Davis from Delaware matched the program record she set yesterday in the prelims, running 7.45 to win the women’s 60m dash. Amira Aduma from Hampton took second with a time of 7.49, while Reese Webster broke her own Elon program record in third with a mark of 7.57. 
 
Women’s 3000 Meters 
A competitive final in the women’s 3000m race saw Arianna DeBoer from William & Mary taking the crown in a time of 9:35.52. Abigail Hassman followed up a victory in the 5000m last night with a second-place finish in the 3000m, posting a time of 9:36.82. Additionally, Beerman from Elon collected her second medal of the day with a third-place finish in the event (9:39.72).
 
Women’s High Jump 
Kenady Wilson of North Carolina A&T won the women’s high jump with a clearance of 1.70m (5-07.00). Aliyah Anderson represented Towson on the podium with a second-place finish (1.64m) in the event, while Biron of Northeastern and UNCW’s Courtney Lines tied for third (J1.64m).  
 
Women’s Shot Put 
William & Mary’s Keeley Suzenski, the 2022 Outdoor Shot Put Champion, took gold in the event indoors, recording a winning mark of 15.39m (50-06.00). She was joined on the podium by Julieth Nwosu from North Carolina A&T in second (14.89m) and Nya Harmon from Hampton in third (14.86m).
 
Women’s 800 Meters
In the women’s 800m, Monmouth’s Ashley Navarro took home first place with a time of 2:11.04. Hampton’s Jordan Mozie finished in second, posting a time of 2:12.66. Stephanie Lair from Elon rounded out the podium finishers, crossing the line in 2:13.91.
 
Women’s 200 Meters 
Hampton’s Aduma ran a season-best 23.90 in the women’s 200m to win gold in the event. Jada Griffin from North Carolina A&T finished runner-up, posting a time of 24.19, while Towson’s Cristal Cuervo ran a personal-best 24.31 to take third. 
 
Women’s 4x800 Meter Relay 
Northeastern took home gold in the women’s 4x88m relay with the team of Sarah PetersenVivian McMahonLauren Trejo and Lucinda Shotts, posting a winning time of 9:00.62. Elon finished in second, running 9:03.52, and Charleston took third (9:14.76) to round out the podium. 
 
Women’s 4x400 Meter Relay 
Per usual, in the 4x400m relay, the entertainment was at a peak as the championship concluded with the podium finishers all within two seconds of each other. North Carolina A&T won gold as the team comprised of Pebbles ScottJada GriffinMykayla Perry and Lucheyona Weaver recorded a time of 3:41.62. The Aggies edged out Hampton in second, running 3:42.77, and William & Mary in third, finishing in a time of 3:43.47.
