Northeastern Men Take Team Title at Inaugural CAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. (Feb. 23, 2023) – Northeastern men’s track and field program won the team race at the inaugural CAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. The Huskies continue a run of dominance in the league, entering the Indoor record books after winning the past seven men’s titles outdoors.
Northeastern won four events on the final day of competition and accumulated 171 total points to surpass Monmouth in second. The Hawks tallied 155 points for the meet ahead of North Carolina A&T in third with 119.
Reheem Hayles, whose indoor season will likely continue at the NCAA National Championships, had an impressive meet and deservingly earned CAA Most Outstanding Track Performer. Hayles won the 400m, running sub-46 seconds before setting a personal best and taking second in the 200m. He was also a member of the Aggie-winning 4x400m relay team.
Keven Kevelier was a podium finisher in two events on day two, and earned CAA Most Outstanding Field Performer honors. Keveiler won the high jump before finishing third in the triple jump and was the top-scoring field performer for the men.
Men’s 3000 Meters
Benjamin Godish took home the title in the men’s 3000m, running 8:13.54 to edge out a Stony Brook duo in second and third. Godish was one of four Huskies to score in the event, tallying a crucial 21 points down the stretch toward the team title. Teammates Shane Henderson and Evan Brennan finished second (8:14.95) and third (8:15.87), respectively.
Men’s 4x800 Meter Relay
In one of the best events on the track during the final day of competition, Northeastern secured the team title by winning gold in the men’s 4x800m relay. The Huskies team of Ryan Dailor, Anders Narita, James Pothier and Tyler Brogan posted a time of 7:37.31 to win by the slimmest of margins. Monmouth trailed the Huskies by six-tenths of a second, running 7:37.99, while Stony Brook claimed the third spot on the podium with a time of 7:38.51.
Men’s 400 Meters
It was a sweep for North Carolina A&T in the men’s 400m. Hayles was picking ‘em up and putting ‘em down, posting an impressive time of 45.99 to win the event. Shemar Chambers matched his indoor PR in the 400 with a time of 46.37 to take second, followed by Ryan Saint-Germain, who had a season-best time of 47.55 in third.
Men’s 60 Meter Hurdles
All the podium finishers in the men’s 60m hurdles went sub-eight seconds, with the top two places separated by three one-thousandths of a second. Ethan Exilhomme of Northeastern won gold, winning the race with a time of 7.71. Jahiem Stern posted a time of 7.74 for second, and North Carolina A&T’s Jason Holmes was third, running 7.91.
Men’s 60 Meters
Noah Sweeney of Northeastern took gold in the men’s 60m dash, matching his personal record with a time of 6.76. A pair of Hampton teammates finished second and third as Abraham Evans ran 6.81 to edge his fellow Pirate Qhiyal Towns, running 6.87.
Men’s 800 Meters
Dugion Blackman of Hampton made his move on the final curve and posted a season-best time of 1:48.56 to take home gold in the men’s 800m. Reed Cherry of Northeastern was in second with a time of 1:49.39, while Jonathan Kumar from William & Mary rounded out the podium finishers in third (1:51.08).
Men’s 200 Meters
After going one-two in the 400m earlier in the day, Chambers and Hayles of North Carolina A&T took the top two spots in the men’s 200m. This time it was Chambers taking gold with a time of 21.00, while Hayles posted a personal-best time of 21.02. Exilhomme from Northeastern rounded out the top three finishers, taking home bronze with a time of 21.36.
Men’s Mile
Louis DiLaurenzio picked up 10 points for Monmouth in the men’s mile, winning the event in 4:06.15. Stony Brook finished second and third in the race, with Robert Becker (4:06.44) edging his teammate Aiden Smyth (4:07.79) for the silver and bronze medals.
Men’s High Jump
It was a sweep for Monmouth in the men’s high jump, with the Hawks securing 24 points toward the team standings. Kevelier, Rickie Casazza, and Blake Wehr all cleared 2.00m (6-06.75) for the Hawks. Kevelier won based on misses, while Casazz finished second and Wehr came third.
Men’s Triple Jump
In the men’s triple jump seven of the eight point-scorers were from Monmouth and Northeastern. The Hawks took first and third on the podium, with Ahmad Brock recording a winning jump of 14.33m (47-02.50) and Kevelier taking third (13.93m). Jordan Spencer split the Monmouth duo, finishing second (14.10m) for the Huskies.
Men’s Shot Put
North Carolina A&T took the top two spots in the men’s shot put as Brayden Hodgest won the event with a personal-best throw of 17.39m (57-07.50). His teammate Carlos Alexander finished runner-up with a mark of 15.82m (51-11.00), while Jason Nwosu of William & Mary rounded out the podium, finishing third (15.63m).
Heptathlon
It was an extremely close battle in the men’s heptathlon and every point counted down to the 1,000m run. Daniel Layton of William & Mary took home gold, accumulating 4,831 points throughout the competition. Paul Wisnaskas of Northeastern was second with 4,635 points ahead of David Strong of Monmouth, totaling 4630 points.
Men’s 4x400 Meter Relay
In the men’s 4x400m relay North Carolina A&T ran away with the gold medal. The Aggies cruised to the victory, running 3:09.82 as the team of Saint-Gerrmain, Hayles, Akeem Lindo and Chambers made the podium. Monmouth finished in second (3:15.21) ahead of Hampton (3:18.03), which made the podium by two-tenths of a second.
