UNCW Captures First CAA Women's Swimming And Diving Championship Since 2006

HAMPTON, Va. (February 25, 2023) – UNCW captured its first CAA Women’s Swimming and Diving Championship in 17 years with a record-setting performance on Saturday night at the Hampton Aquaplex.

The Seahawks finished with 803 points, which was their most ever at the CAA championship, to take home the trophy for the first time since 2006. It was their fourth CAA title overall (1998, 1999, 2006, 2023). Defending champion William & Mary placed second with 534.5 points and Northeastern posted a best-ever third-place finish with 527.5 points. Delaware was fourth with 520 points, followed by Towson (460), Drexel (335), Monmouth (177) and Stony Brook (148).

Delaware senior Mira Selling was honored as the Most Outstanding Swimmer of the Meet and UNCW senior Courtney Klausen was chosen as the Most Outstanding Diver of the Meet for the third year in a row. UNCW’s Bobby Guntoro was voted the CAA Women’s Swimming Coach of the Year and Northeastern’s Lauren Colby was selected as the CAA Women’s Diving Coach of the Year.



Women’s 1650 Yard Freestyle

UNCW junior Brooke Knisely, who won her second straight 500 free on Thursday, also repeated as CAA champion in the women’s 1650 free with a time of 16:21.80. William & Mary’s Elizabeth Intihar placed second in a time of 16:36.92 and UNCW’s Georgia Watkins took third with a time of 16:46.79.

Women’s 200 Yard Backstroke

Freshman Anna Verlander became the first Northeastern swimmer to capture the women’s 200 back at the CAA championship, touching the wall in a time of 1:55.87. Defending champion Federica Nocera of Drexel placed second with a time of 156.97 and third place went to Towson freshman Ally Frame in 1:57.62.

Women’s 100 Yard Freestyle

William & Mary senior Katie Stevenson broke the CAA meet record and tied the all-time record in the women’s 100 yard free with a time of 48.37, capturing the event for the second straight year. Delaware’s Mira Selling finished close behind in second with a time of 48.64 and UNCW’s Emily Waite was third with a time of 49.47.

Women’s 200 Yard Breaststroke

William & Mary senior Annie Tuttle capped her career with a third straight title in the women’s 200 yard breast, finishing in 2:13.45. She is the first three-time CAA champ in the event since 2011. Finishing second was UNCW’s Gil Shaw in a time of 2:14.41 and placing third was Drexel’s Megan Sicinski with a time of 2:14.75.

Women’s 200 Yard Butterfly

William & Mary freshman Sophia Heilen, who broke the CAA all-time record in the women’s 100 fly on Friday, continued her success with a victory in the women’s 200 fly in a time of 1:59.36. UNCW’s Victoria Cunningham placed second in a time of 1:59.56 and Delaware’s Aislinn Mitchell was third with a time of 2:00.18.

Women’s 1-Meter Diving

Junior Julia Servas became the first Delaware diver to win the women’s 1-meter competition since 2002 with a score of 295.15. Three-time defending champion Courtney Klausen of UNCW finished second with a score of 292.85 and third place went to Northeastern’s Erin Murphy with a score of 280.60.

Women’s 400 Yard Freestyle Relay

Delaware broke the CAA all-time record in the women’s 400 free relay with a time of 3:18.95, breaking the mark of 3:20.37 set by UNCW last November. The Blue Hens’ team of Mira Selling, Anthi Lyra, Natalie Dobrzykowski and Erin Shema became the first Delaware squad to win the event at the CAA championship. Finishing second was William & Mary in a time of 3:19.41 and taking third was UNCW with a time of 3:19.54. All three teams broke the previous CAA all-time record.
