RICHMOND, Va. (February 28, 2023) – The CAA announced its weekly award winners in men’s and women’s tennis. Honored on the men’s side were Elon junior
Daniel Martin and the Delaware team of grad students
William Wibmer and
James Wilkinson. Recognized on the women’s side were William & Mary sophomore
Hedda Gurholt and the Delaware duo of senior
Isabella Montana and sophomore
Alina Vasilenko.
CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Daniel Martin, Jr., Elon (Letchworth, UK)
Martin knocked off 75
th-ranked Rafa Izquierdo Luque of NC State as Elon dropped a hard-fought 5-2 decision to the No. 35 Wolfpack. Playing at No. 1 singles, Martin battled past Luque, 6-4, 4-6, 1-0 (11-9) for his first victory over a nationally ranked foe. Martin leads Elon with seven singles victories at the No. 1 spot during the spring season.
CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
William Wibmer, Gr., Delaware (Uruguay, Maldonado)
James Wilkinson, Gr., Delaware (Hertfordshire, England)
Wibmer and Wilkinson recorded a 2-0 mark at No. 1 doubles as Delaware extended its winning streak by beating Boston University (6-1) and Bryant (5-2). The Blue Hens’ tandem clinched the doubles point against Boston University by edging Alejandro Licea and Dion Loutas, 7-6 (1). They also helped the Blue Hens sweep the doubles competition vs. Bryant with a 6-4 win over Jean-Christophe Baril and Marcus Macaulay. Wibmer also added two singles victories and Wilkinson split his matches last week.
CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Hedda Gurholt, So., William & Mary (Oslo, Norway)
Gurholt went 2-0 at No. 1 singles to help William & Mary post team victories over CAA foe Hampton (7-0) and defending Atlantic 10 champion VCU (4-3). The sophomore battled past Hampton’s Angelina Blinova, 7-5, 4-6, 1-0 (10-5), in the conference matchup. Against long-time rival VCU, Gurholt had another three-set thriller, defeating Victoria Smirnova, 6-3, 3-6, 7-5 to tie the match at 3-3. Gurholt improved to 5-2 at No. 1 singles this season.
CAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Isabella Montana, Sr., Delaware (Miami, Fla.)
Alina Vasilenko, So., Delaware (Moscow, Russia)
Montana and Vasilenko secured the doubles point to help Delaware knock off Big Ten foe Rutgers, 5-2, for its sixth consecutive victory. Competing at the No. 2 doubles slot, the Blue Hens’ duo got past the Scarlet Knights’ Arina Valitova and Jackeline Lopez, 6-4, to improve to 7-0 on the season. Vasilenko added a 6-7 (5), 6-4, 7-5 victory at No. 2 singles as Delaware upped its record to 7-2.
