The Weekend Preview - Feb. 9, 2023

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 9, 2023) – CAA softball and lacrosse teams begin their 2023 seasons this weekend, while final preparations will be made for CAA Championships in indoor track and field and a pair of conference clashes highlight the upcoming tennis schedule.
 
Softball
The opening weekend of college softball has arrived, and eight CAA teams will begin their 2023 campaigns. Charleston, Elon, and UNCW will start the spring at home, highlighted by the Cougars hosting former CAA rival James Madison on Saturday (5:30 p.m., FloSoftball) and the defending champions entertaining No. 11 Virginia Tech for a pair of games at Boseman Field. Headlining the teams on the road, Stony Brook will face two Power Five foes at the FAU Paradise Classic, including No. 23 Mississippi State (11:30 a.m., FloSoftball) on Saturday and Iowa (9 a.m., FloSoftball) on Sunday. Delaware finishes the weekend at Houston (1:30 p.m., ESPN+) on Sunday. Newcomers Hampton, North Carolina A&T and Monmouth will also be in action. The Lady Pirates travel to Mercer for the Macon Heart of Georgia Classic, the Aggies join the Phoenix at Elon's home invitational and the Hawks will face Siena for a doubleheader on Friday. Women’s Lacrosse
Seven of eight CAA Women’s Lacrosse teams begin their seasons this weekend with six of the seven playing at home. A pair of Friday matinees begin the year with Monmouth hosting George Mason (2 p.m., FloLive) and Delaware welcoming Lehigh (3 p.m., FloLive.) A Saturday morning for bagels and lax awaits on Long Island, where Hofstra begins its season hosting nearby foe LIU (11 a.m., FloLive). Four games follow at noon with Drexel hosting Binghamton, William & Mary taking on Villanova in a rematch of last year’s season-opening thriller, and Elon taking on Old Dominion – all on FloLive – while Towson battles in-state opponent Mount St. Mary’s in Emmitsburg (MountAthletics.com). No. 6 Stony Brook will be the one team not competing in the season’s opening weekend. | Weekend Schedule
 
Men’s Lacrosse
Hofstra opened the 2023 CAA Men’s Lacrosse last weekend, and five more teams begin their spring campaign on Saturday. The defending conference champions, Delaware, start their season on the road against Lafayette (ESPN+) at noon. At 1 p.m., newcomer Stony Brook visits No. 10/9 Rutgers (B1G+), while Fairfield travels to Lehigh (ESPN+) and Hampton plays at Guilford simultaneously. Hofstra returns to action for its home opener against Navy (FloLive) at 2 p.m., and Towson wraps up the weekend on the road at Mount St. Mary’s at 3 p.m. | Weekend Schedule
 
Indoor Track & Field
With just two weeks until the inaugural CAA Indoor Track & Field Championships, 11 teams will compete this weekend in preparation for Virginia Beach. Six teams will participate in their final meet before the conference championship as Delaware heads to the Big Apple Invitational, Hampton goes across the bay for the NSU Invitational, North Carolina A&T travels to Clemson for the Tiger Paw Invitational, and Hofstra, Northeastern and Stony Brook will participate in the David Hemery Valentine Invitational at Boston University. Monmouth and Towson will join their CAA counterparts at Boston University, while Elon, UNCW and William & Mary head to Liberty for the Darius Dixon Memorial Invitational.
 
Tennis
Seven women’s and six men’s teams will be in action this weekend with both William & Mary squads hosting CAA opponents. The Tribe women welcome Towson before a clash with Morgan State, while the W&M men battle Hampton before visiting Penn State. Elsewhere around the league on the women’s side, Delaware will face Villanova indoors in Wilmington before visiting NJIT, Drexel hosts Delaware State and heads to Lehigh, Elon takes a trip to Clemson and Gardner-Webb, Hampton visits Johns Hopkins and Christopher Newport, and Stony Brook crosses the Sound to face Fairfield. In men’s action, Delaware visits Navy, Drexel joins its women’s squad in Bethlehem, Elon takes a trip out I-40 to face North Carolina, Monmouth hosts Holy Cross and Rider indoors in Little Silver, New Jersey.

Three men’s teams and an individual will be in action in a light week in the CAA Golf schedule. Charleston will visit Puerto Rico for an event hosted by Purdue, Drexel and Elon will fly to Florida for a tournament hosted by UNCG, and William & Mary will be represented in the Genesis Invitational Collegiate Showcase in California.
