RICHMOND, Va. (March 14, 2023) – The CAA announced its weekly award winners in men’s and women’s tennis. Honored on the men’s side were Delaware grad student
Luis Molina and the North Carolina A&T team of freshman
Mathieu Dussaubat and sophomore
Ian Pedersen. Recognized on the women’s side were Delaware sophomore
Alina Vasilenko and the Elon tandem of junior
Lizette Reding and senior
Sibel Tanik.
CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Luis Molina, Gr., Delaware (Cochabama, Bolivia)
Molina rallied from a 5-3 third-set deficit to clinch the match in Delaware’s 6-1 victory at CAA foe Hofstra last Saturday. Playing at No. 2 singles, the grad student battled past Bo Cautaerts, 4-6, 6-3, 7-5 to give the Blue Hens the deciding point. Delaware improved to 10-1 overall and extended its winning streak to nine.
CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Mathieu Dussaubat, Fr., North Carolina A&T (Porto, Portugal)
Ian Pedersen, So., North Carolina A&T (Playa Blanca, Canary Islands)
Dussaubat and Pedersen clinched the critical doubles point to help North Carolina A&T edge Queens University of Charlotte, 4-3, last Wednesday. Competing at No. 3 doubles, the Aggies duo defeated Arthur Bazil and Lukas Gosselin, 6-3, to earn the point after a split on the other two courts. Pedersen also clinched the match with a 2-6, 6-1, 6-2 victory over Bazil at No. 5 singles. A&T improved to 3-0 overall this season and ended a five-match losing streak to Queens.
CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Alina Vasilenko, So., Delaware (Moscow, Russia)
Vasilenko went 2-0 in singles and doubles last week as Delaware posted team victories over Hofstra (7-0) and George Washington (6-1). Playing at the No. 1 singles spot, the sophomore beat Hofstra’s Jimena Garbino, 6-3, 6-1, and rallied past GW’s Stella Wiesemann, 3-6, 6-4, 7-5. Vasilenko also got a win at No. 1 doubles vs. Hofstra and No. 2 doubles against GW as Delaware pushed its winning streak to 10 matches.
CAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Lizette Reding, Jr., Elon (Leon, Guanajuato, Mexico)
Sibel Tanik, Sr., Elon (Raleigh, N.C.)
Reding and Tanik continued their dominant run at No. 1 doubles in Elon’s 6-1 triumph over in-state foe Davidson last Saturday. The Phoenix duo blanked Davidson’s Kayva Patel and Daniela Porges, 6-0, to help Elon win the doubles point. Reding and Tanik have won an amazing 24 of their last 25 games during a four-match winning streak. They both also posted singles victories against the Wildcats.
