RICHMOND, Va. (March 21, 2023) – The CAA announced its weekly award winners in men’s and women’s tennis. Honored on the men’s side were William & Mary senior
George Davis and the UNCW duo of juniors
Reece Falck and
Bekhzod Rasamatov. Recognized on the women’s side were William & Mary sophomore
Hedda Gurholt and the Elon team of sophomore
Miray Konar and freshman
Helen Sarikulaya.
CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
George Davis, Sr., William & Mary (London, England)
Davis posted a pair of impressive victories at No. 1 singles in William & Mary’s tight matches with Gardner-Webb and Delaware last week. The senior clinched a 4-3 win over Gardner-Webb by battling past three-time Big South Player of the Week Eduardo Dias, 7-6 (9), 6-7 (5), 7-6 (1). In a 4-3 setback to Delaware, he defeated James Wilkinson, 6-4, 7-6 (3) in singles and teamed with Bill Duo for a 6-4 triumph at No. 1 doubles. Davis has won three straight singles matches.
CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Reece Falck, Jr., UNCW (Christchurch, New Zealand)
Bekhzod Rasamatov, Jr., UNCW (Tushkent, Uzbekistan)
Falck and Rasamatov, ranked No. 69 nationally in doubles, recorded two more wins last week as UNCW defeated Illinois State (4-1) and Youngstown State (4-0). Playing at the No. 1 spot, the Seahawks duo cruised past ISU’s Adrian Dibildox and Arvid Hjalte, 6-2, and beat YSU’s Nathan Favier and Clement Mainguy, 6-4. Falck and Rasamatov improved to 4-3 at No. 1 doubles this season.
CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Hedda Gurholt, So., William & Mary (Oslo, Norway)
Gurholt clinched both matches as William & Mary beat Pacific (5-2) and Delaware (4-3) last week. Playing at the No. 1 singles spot, the sophomore topped Pacific’s Klara Kosan, 6-4, 6-3. With the match against the Blue Hens tied at 3-3, Gurholt rallied from a 3-1 third-set deficit to edge Adel-Bya Abidullina, 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (4). Gurholt upped her record to 9-3 at No. 1 singles.
CAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Miray Konar, So., Elon (Izmir, Turkey)
Helen Sarikulaya, Fr., Elon (Rockville, Md.)
Konar and Sarikulaya went 3-0 last week to help Elon pick up the doubles point in team victories over Morgan State (4-1), Shaw (5-0) and UNCW (5-2). The Phoenix duo defeated MSU’s Ana-Lei Kalawe and Stefania Moysiadi, 6-1, at the No. 3 slot, and then moved up to No. 2 against Shaw and rolled over Sevval Ozseker and Anja Antonijevic, 6-1. In hard-fought CAA contest at UNCW, Konar and Sarikulaya clinched the doubles point at No. 3 with a narrow 7-6 (5) victory against Stela Joksimovic and Meredith Taylor. The tandem is now 6-2 in doubles.
