RICHMOND, Va. (March 28, 2023) – The CAA announced its weekly award winners in men’s and women’s tennis. Honored on the men’s side were North Carolina A&T senior
Esteban Lopez and the Elon duo of freshmen
Oskar Antinheimo and
Veljko Krstic. Recognized on the women’s side were UNCW senior
Zoe Huffman and the North Carolina A&T team of freshman
Nuria Sanz and sophomore
Cielo Tapia-Cruz.
CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Esteban Lopez, Sr., North Carolina A&T (Bogota, Colombia)
Lopez captured a pair of matches at No. 1 singles as North Carolina A&T earned road wins over in-state foes UNC Asheville (4-3) and UNCG (6-1) to improve to 8-0, which is the best start in school history. The senior edged UNCA’s Sam Nicholson, 7-5, 6-4, and followed with a match-clinching 6-4, 7-5 triumph over UNCG’s John Gabelic, which gave A&T its first win over the Spartans in modern history.
CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Oskar Antinheimo, Fr., Elon (Helsinki, Finland)
Veljko Krstic, Fr., Elon (Belgrade, Serbia)
Antinheimo and Krstic went 3-0 at No. 2 doubles as Elon claimed the doubles point in all three matches against Dartmouth (4-3), Davidson (6-1) and Presbyterian (2-4). The freshmen duo blanked Dartmouth’s Alex Knox-Jones and Logan Chang, 6-0, defeated Davidson’s Alejandro Solares and Nico Pinzon, 6-3, and clinched the point against Presbyterian’s Javier Matos and Sebastian Dominguez with a 6-4 victory. Antinheimo and Krstic also contributed in singles with a combined 5-1 record last week.
CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Zoe Huffman, Sr., UNCW (Maiden, N.C.)
Huffman recorded a pair of victories at No. 1 singles to help UNCW secure road wins over Wagner (5-2) and CAA foe Hofstra (6-1) last week. The senior defeated Wagner’s Tara Dakic, 6-2, 6-4, and got past Hofstra’s Jimena Garbino, 6-4, 6-4. Huffman, who also went 1-1 at No. 1 doubles last week, improved to 8-5 at the top singles spot this season.
CAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Nuria Sanz, Fr., North Carolina A&T (Valencia, Spain)
Cielo Tapia-Cruz, So., North Carolina A&T (Morelia, Mexico)
Sanz and Tapia-Cruz clinched the doubles point in North Carolina A&T’s 4-0 victory over Towson in CAA action. Playing at the No. 2 position, the Aggies’ duo topped Towson’s Sania Suchinsky and Nadeen Shrebati, 6-4, to earn the point after a split on the other two courts. Sanz also improved to 8-0 in singles following a 6-0, 6-1 win over Erin Gray at the No. 3 slot as A&T posted its first victory in a conference match since 2019.
