RICHMOND, Va. (April 11, 2023) – The CAA announced its weekly award winners in men’s and women’s tennis. Honored on the men’s side were Monmouth grad student
Victor Castro and the UNCW duo of junior
Drew Broadstreet and sophomore
Trey Mallory. Recognized on the women’s side were William & Mary sophomore
Hedda Gurholt and the Drexel tandem of sophomore
Lorie Lemongo and senior
Renata Lombera.
CAA Men’s Tennis Player of the Week
Victor Castro, Gr., Monmouth (Marilia, Brazil)
Castro posted a 3-0 record in singles and doubles as Monmouth extended its winning streak to eight with victories over Bryant (5-2), Wagner (7-0) and Hofstra (4-1) last week. Playing at No. 3 singles, the grad student defeated Bryant’s Nick Lorenz, 6-0, 6-3, and Hofstra’s Josh Reynolds, 6-2, 3-6, 6-4. He moved up to No. 1 vs. Wagner and topped Rodigo Perez, 6-2, 6-2. In doubles, Castro and partner Gabriel Busato improved to 7-0 as a team this season with three victories at the No. 2 slot.
CAA Men’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Drew Broadstreet, Jr., UNCW (Summerfield, N.C.)
Trey Mallory, So., UNCW (Southampton, Bermuda)
Broadstreet and Mallory split a pair of matches at No. 1 doubles as UNCW picked up a 4-2 victory at East Tennessee before falling at No. 18 Florida State (4-0). The duo posted a 6-3 win over ETSU’s Peter Kalocsai and Adam Nagoudi to help the Seahawks earn the critical doubles point. Against the nationally ranked Seminoles, Broadstreet and Mallory were beaten 6-3 by Alex Bulte and Loris Pourroy as UNCW had its seven-match winning streak snapped.
CAA Women’s Tennis Player of the Week
Hedda Gurholt, So., William & Mary (Oslo, Norway)
Gurholt rallied for a three-set victory at No. 1 singles as William & Mary beat Elon, 6-1, in a rematch of last year’s CAA title clash. The Tribe sophomore dropped the first set to Elon’s Sibel Tanik, 7-5, but battled back to take the final two sets, 6-2, 6-1, as W&M captured a trio of three-set matches in singles to get the win. Gurholt, who moved to 17-7 overall, also won her match at No. 3 doubles, 6-0.
CAA Women’s Tennis Doubles Team of the Week
Lorie Lemongo, So., Drexel (Yaounde, Cameroon)
Renata Lombera, Sr., Drexel (Mexico City, Mexico)
Lemongo and Lombera went 2-0 at No. 1 doubles as Drexel recorded team victories over Monmouth (4-3) and Saint Joseph’s (6-1) last week. The Dragons’ tandem blanked Monmouth’s Ann Spurka and Lauren Landstrom, 6-0, and rolled past SJU’s Anna Kirk and Stow Weiss, 6-2, as the Dragons claimed the doubles point in both matches. Lemongo and Lombera also registered straight-set victories in both of their singles matches at the No. 1 and No. 2 positions.
