SOUTHPORT, N.C. (April 14, 2023) – Charleston holds a one-shot lead over UNCW with Delaware close behind after teams completed 18 holes at the CAA Women’s Golf Championship at the Reserve Course at St. James.
Charleston’s 295 (+7) was good for the edge over UNCW’s 296 to put the defending champions in front through 18 holes. Delaware is five shots off the lead with Towson, Elon, and Monmouth making up four through six in the standings and seventh through ninth separated by a total of one shot between William & Mary and the tie of North Carolina A&T and Hofstra a stroke behind the Tribe.
UNCW’s
Phu Khine leads all players with a 3-under 69 in the opening round. Khine, the 2019 medalist, bogeyed the opening hole before birdieing three on the front nine and five in total. Khine was one of just two players under par at St. James, as Charleston’s
Emma Schimpf sits alone in second – her finish from a year ago – with a 1-under 71 that saw her at par on 15 of 18 holes. UNCW’s
Mallory Fobes and Delaware’s
Anna Kittelson carded even par 72s on the day.
Teams were delayed by 90 minutes in the Championship’s opening round due to rain and thunderstorms that moved through the area overnight and in the early morning hours.
Second round action from St. James begins at 8:30 a.m. Saturday with Hofstra, North Carolina A&T, and William & Mary beginning the morning. Monmouth, Elon, and Towson will start play at 9:20 a.m., while the top three teams in the standings – Charleston, UNCW, and Delaware – will see their first players tee off at 10:10 a.m.
