SOUTHPORT, N.C. (April 16, 2023) – Charleston teammates
Emma Schimpf and
Viktoria Hund were the top two finishers for the second year in a row, powering the Cougars to their second consecutive and fifth CAA Women’s Golf Championship at The Reserve Course at St. James.
Schimpf, last year’s runner-up, led at the end of the final two rounds and finished at 3-under, the fourth-best 54-hole performance in the history of the Championship and best since Delaware’s Andi Slane was 7-under in 2015. Charleston is the first back-to-back team champion since Delaware in 2016 and 2017; the Cougars’ +16 performance as a team was one stroke off the tournament record by UNCW in 2008.
Hund, the 2022 medalist, finished in a three-way tie for second with UNCW’s
Phu Khine and Delaware’s
Anna Kittelson at 2-over; they were joined on the all-tournament team by Elon’s
Annabelle Ackroyd. Elon’s
Leiu Yuenyong and UNCW’s
Mallory Fobes tied for sixth, Elon’s
Lotte Fox matched Charleston’s
Adrian Anderson for eighth, and a tie between Delaware’s
Alisa Khokhlova, UNCW’s
Victoria Levy, and Towson’s
Faith McIlvain completed the top 10.
Charleston entered the day leading UNCW by 12 shots and Delaware by 14 before going on to finish 17 strokes ahead of the Blue Hens and 19 in front of third-place Elon, which climbed one spot in each of the final two days after standing in fifth through 18 holes. UNCW was fourth and Towson rounded out the top five.
William & Mary used a program-record round in the Championship on Saturday to secure a sixth-place finish, while Hofstra climbed to seventh with a Championship program record on Saturday that was beaten by 15 strokes on Sunday. Monmouth finished eighth and North Carolina A&T ninth in their inaugural CAA Championship appearances.
Charleston has won all five of its titles at St. James; the 17-stroke victory is tied for the largest since the Cougars won their first CAA title by 18 strokes in 2015.
