Ellie Masera were named among the 25 men’s and women’s nominees for the 2023 Tewaaraton Award announced by the Tewaaraton Foundation on Thursday.
The Tewaaraton Award is recognized as the pre-eminent lacrosse award, annually honoring the top male and female college lacrosse player in the United States. The selection committees are comprised of premier college coaches and are appointed annually.
Kurtz ranks second in the NCAA with 65 points and 44 goals, leading the CAA in both categories. Last week, the Ontario native became the conference’s all-time leading goal scorer, netting his 165th and 166th career tallies. It came one week after breaking the league’s record for career points (259). Kurtz has at least two goals and three points in every game this season. The redshirt senior has five or more points on nine occasions, with at least four goals in eight contests. Kurtz earned Preseason All-CAA Honorable Mention accolades and has been the CAA Offensive Player of the Week twice this spring.
A rise in conference from America East to the CAA has not slowed down Masera, whose 50 total goals rank 11
th nationally and lead the league by 13. Masera is sixth nationally in goals per game (3.85), 16
th in points per game (4.69), and 28
th in draw controls per game (5.77) – all marks that pace the CAA. The junior from Long Island has been CAA Player of the Week three times this season and was CAA Preseason Player of the Year, USA Lacrosse Magazine’s Preseason Midfielder of the Year and an ILWomen midseason All-America selection as part of an extensive list of 2023 accolades.
The 2023 Tewaaraton Watch Lists were first unveiled on Feb. 10, with additions announced on March 9 and March 30. The five men’s and five women’s finalists will be announced on May 11 and will be invited to the Tewaaraton Award Ceremony in Washington on June 1.
