Strong Start Gives Drexel Lead Through 18 Holes of CAA Men’s Golf Championship

SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. (April 23, 2023) – The Drexel men’s golf team used a strong front nine to build a four-stroke lead through 18 holes of the CAA Men’s Golf Championship at Dataw Island.


 
Drexel’s Brockton English (-3) and Drue Nicholas (-1) helped lead the Dragons with Nicholas carding seven birdies in the opening round. Drexel was a 3-under 285 as a team and recorded 11 birdies as a team on the front nine.
 
UNCW’s Patrick Sparks (-4) led all players individually in the first round and helped the Seahawks finish Sunday four shots back of Drexel, while Charleston is two behind UNCW thanks to under-par performances from former medalists Kieron van Wyk (-2) and Zach Reuland (-1). van Wyk joined Nicholas with a tournament-best seven birdies in the opening round.
 
William & Mary is fourth with Charlie Bundy (-1) in the top five, with the Tribe’s 296 just ahead of Elon (298), Delaware (300), and North Carolina A&T (302) in the opening round. Towson, Monmouth, and Hofstra rounded out the 10-team competition.

The teams are playing a combination of Dataw's Morgan River and Cotton Dike courses in 2023, competing on the back nine of each.
 
The Second Round will begin Monday at 8:30 a.m. with the final group teeing off at 11:50 a.m.
