SAINT HELENA ISLAND, S.C. (April 24, 2023) – UNCW shot 15-under par – tying the best single-round performance in CAA Men’s Golf Championship history – to build a 16-shot lead entering the tournament’s final day.
Three Seahawks moved into the top six individually in the second round effort, led by a 7-under on the day from
Patrick Sparks, who leads the field by six shots at 11-under. Sparks is the sixth player in the Championship’s history to card a round of 7-under or better.
Rune Bokeid moved into fifth at 2-under with a 69 on Monday, while
Walker Isley is in a three-way tie for sixth at 1-under thanks to a 67 in Monday’s action. UNCW’s 15-under matches James Madison’s performance at the Salisbury Country Club in Midlothian, Virginia, in 2017.
Drexel (+2), Charleston (+3), and Elon (+4) are in a tightly contested battle in second through fourth, as Elon’s 6-under Monday was the second-best performance of the middle day. William & Mary rounds out the top five with Delaware sixth, Towson seventh, and North Carolina A&T, Monmouth, and Hofstra rounding out the 10-team competition.
The three UNCW players under par are joined by two from Drexel –
Drue Nicholas (-4) and
Brockton English (-1) – along with Charleston’s
Kieron van Wyk (-5), Elon’s
Matt Doyle (-3), and William & Mary’s
Trevor Binau (-1).
Among the teams in the top five, UNCW is looking for its eighth CAA title on Tuesday, Charleston its seventh, William & Mary its second, and Drexel and Elon their first.
The final round will begin Tuesday at 8 a.m. with the last group teeing off at 9:40 a.m.
