RICHMOND, Va. (April 26, 2023) – The 2023 CAA Men’s Tennis Championship gets underway on Thursday with 10 teams competing for the conference title at the Mackesy Tennis Center at the Millie West Courts on the campus of William & Mary in Williamsburg, Va. The 10-team field is the largest since 2012 as Hampton, Monmouth and North Carolina A&T make their CAA debuts.
In the event of inclement weather, matches will be moved to the McCormack-Nagelsen Tennis Center on the William & Mary campus.
The tournament begins with a pair of first-round matches on Thursday. At 11 a.m., #8 Charleston meets #9 Hofstra, followed by #7 Monmouth against #10 Hampton at 2 p.m.
The quarterfinals start at 9 a.m. on Friday as top seed and defending champion UNCW faces the Charleston/Hofstra winner, followed by #4 Drexel against #5 North Carolina A&T at Noon. Second-seeded William & Mary takes on the Monmouth/Hampton winner at 3 p.m. and #3 Elon challenges #6 Delaware at 6 p.m.
The two semifinal matches are scheduled for Noon and 3 p.m. on Saturday and the championship match is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday, with the winner earning an automatic berth in the NCAA Men’s Tennis Championship.
UNCW (14-7) is looking to capture its third straight CAA men’s tennis title and ninth in 14 years. The Seahawks return all six members of their singles lineup from a year ago, led by All-CAA standout Reece Falck at the No. 1 position. Harold Huens, the 2022 CAA Rookie of the Year, is 8-0 at the No. 2 position and Gabe Hurtado enters the tournament with a 12-3 record and riding a nine-match winning streak.
William & Mary (9-10) has reached the finals in three of the past five CAA Championships, but is looking to take home the trophy for the first time since 2015. The Tribe has plenty of experience with three grad students and a senior in its singles lineup. Topping that group are senior George Davis at the No. 1 spot and grad student Joseph Brailovsky, who has a 10-7 record, playing at No. 2.
Elon (13-8) has advanced to the finals in the two of the past three tournaments and earned its first CAA championship in 2019. The Phoenix features four players who were in the lineup on last year’s squad that reached the championship match. At the top of the lineup is junior Daniel Martin, who has a 15-6 mark, and senior Nicholas Campbell, who was the Most Outstanding Performer at the 2022 tournament.
Drexel (9-10) is seeded fourth in the tournament, which matches the 2013 squad for the highest tournament seed in program history. The Dragons are on a four-match winning streak, which includes three victories over CAA teams. Sophomore Alan Jesudason is Drexel’s top player, while Daniel Dudockin sports a 13-4 record at No. 2.
North Carolina A&T posted an impressive 16-2 record this season, with the only two setbacks coming to UNCW and Elon. Senior Esteban Lopez has an 11-6 mark at the No. 1 singles slot and sophomore Eder Blanco has a team-best 15-2 record at No. 2 singles.
Delaware (16-8) advanced to the semifinals of the tournament for the first time last season and is hoping to build on that success. The Blue Hens, who won their last three matches, feature a pair of veterans at the top of the lineup with grad students James Wilkinson and Luis Molina.
Monmouth (16-6) enters the tournament having won 10 of its last 12 matches. Fifth-year Niels Van Noord has an 11-7 mark at the No. 1 singles position and No. 2 player Dmitry Bezborodov has a 13-9 record this season.
Charleston (10-10) has reached the CAA Tournament finals three times and won its only title in 2016. The Cougars, who went 6-3 in their final nine matches, have sophomore Mattia Bernardi at the top of the lineup and junior Zac Larke at the No. 2 spot.
Hofstra (6-11) will try to rebound after dropping several competitive matches down the stretch. Top player Ostap Kovalenko has a solid 9-7 record in dual matches and senior Bo Cautaerts provides experience at No. 2.
Hampton (10-8) enters its first CAA Tournament on a season-best four-match winning streak. The Pirates’ young squad is led by freshman Erden Er, who has an 8-6 record, and junior Donte Armbrister, who has nine victories.
There is free admission to all matches at the 2023 CAA Men’s Tennis Championship.
