CAA Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Awards – April 3

RICHMOND, Va. (April 3, 2023) – The CAA has announced its eighth men’s lacrosse weekly awards for the 2023 season. Delaware junior attackman JP Ward was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week, and Hofstra senior goalie Mac Gates earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week honors. In addition, Drexel freshman Conor Hooley was the CAA Rookie of the Week.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
JP Ward, Delaware
Junior | Attack | Owing Mills, Md. / McDonogh School
Ward tallied a career-high 10 points on two goals and a career-best eight assists, leading Delaware to a season-high 19 goals in a victory over Hampton. The eight assists match the all-time conference single-game record, established in 2002. It is also tied for the highest single-game total in the NCAA this season, while the 10 points match the CAA single-game high and rank second in the nation this spring.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Mac Gates, Hofstra
Senior | Goalie | San Francisco, Calif. / Saint Ignatius Prep
Gates recorded a season-high 15 saves in a dominant defensive performance that led Hofstra to a 12-6 win over Monmouth in CAA play. The senior goalie logged all 60 minutes between the pipes in torrential rain, posting a season-best .714 save percentage. Gates added one ground ball and was tremendous early on, allowing just one goal in the first half as the Pride allowed its fewest goals in a game this season.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Conor Hooley, Drexel
Freshman | Attack | Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury
Hooley tallied a career-best four points on two goals and two assists to help Drexel extend its winning streak to four with a 15-11 victory over Fairfield. It marks the fourth multi-goal game for the freshman this season, while it was his first-ever multi-assist performance. Hooley has found the back of the net in six games this spring, and it’s his seventh with at least one point.
