Hunter Peters
RICHMOND, Va. (May 1, 2023) – The CAA has announced its final men’s lacrosse weekly awards for the 2023 season. Stony Brook graduate midfielder Matt Anderson and Fairfield senior attackman Max Paparozzi shared CAA Offensive Player of the Week honors, with Towson graduate defender Garrett Zungailia earning CAA Defensive Player of the Week accolades. In addition, Drexel freshman Conor Hooley received his third CAA Rookie of the Week honor this spring.
CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Matt Anderson, Stony Brook
Graduate | Midfield | Burlington, Ont. / Corpus Christi
Anderson tallied a game-high five points on four goals and one assist, leading Stony Brook to a CAA Championship berth in its inaugural season with an 11-10 victory over Hofstra. Anderson netted the final score of the first half and the first goal of the second half, sparking a 7-1 run that gave Stony Brook a 10-5 advantage before tallying the eventual game-winning goal in the fourth quarter. The five points and four goals match career highs for the graduate student from Burlington, Ontario, who notched his sixth hat trick of the season in the effort.
CO-OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Max Paparozzi, Fairfield
Senior | Attack | Allendale, N.J. / Northern Highlands
Paparozzi capped his senior season with a career-high eight points, leading Fairfield to a Rafferty Stadium record of 22 goals in its season finale victory. The Allendale, N.J. native matched career highs with four goals and four assists, adding one ground ball in the effort. The performance extended Paparozzi’s point-scoring streak to 29 straight games, with a goal in 25 consecutive contests.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Garrett Zungailia, Towson
Graduate | Defense | Timonium, Md. / Calvert Hall
Zungailia anchored a Towson defense unit that limited the top-ranked offense in the conference to its fewest goals in league play as the Tigers defeated No. 15/13 Delaware 15-10 to secure a berth in the CAA Championship. The graduate defender matched a career-high with three caused turnovers and added three ground balls. Zungaila shut down the CAA’s leading goal-scorer as the close defender, helping Towson hold the Blue Hens to a season-low in goals en route to its first win over a ranked opponent this spring.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
Conor Hooley, Drexel
Freshman | Attack | Woodbury, Minn. / Woodbury
Hooley finished the regular season with a career-best six goals, leading Drexel to a 16-7 win over Monmouth, as the Dragons clinched the No. 2 seed in the conference tournament. The freshman attack tallied a hat trick in each half, doubling his previous career-best of three goals. It marks his fifth multi-goal effort this season as Hooley ended his rookie campaign with a score in four of his final five games.
