NEWARK, Del. (May 10, 2023) – It was a record-setting night for the Delaware men’s lacrosse team, which turned in its best offensive performance of the season and cruised to a 25-10 victory over Marist in the opening round of the NCAA Men’s Lacrosse Championship on Wednesday night at Delaware Stadium.
The Blue Hens (13-4), who won for the eighth time in the past nine games, advance to face top-seeded Duke at 5 p.m. on Sunday in Durham, N.C. The first-round game can be seen on ESPNU.
The 25 goals were the most ever for Delaware and matched the second-most goals by any team in an NCAA Tournament game. Senior Mike Robinson led the offensive onslaught with seven goals and one assist, setting a new UD mark for goals in an NCAA Tournament contest. CAA Offensive Player of the Year Tye Kurtz contributed five goals and three assists and JP Ward added four goals and three assists. Kurtz got things started by scoring back-to-back goals in a five-second span to put UD up 2-0 with 13:15 left in the first quarter, and Robinson added another just over a minute later. Robinson tallied his second goal late in the period to put UD ahead 5-3 after one.
Leading 6-4 midway through the second quarter, Delaware broke the game with eight goals over the final 7:14 of the period. Kurtz started the surge with his third goal of the night and goals from Jason Kolar, Robinson and Nick Jessen in the final two minutes put the Blue Hens in control, 14-5, at the half. The 14 first-half goals were a season-high for UD.
Delaware didn’t let up, scoring eight more times in the third quarter. Back-to-back man-up goals from Cam Acchione early in the period made it 16-7. Robinson and Ward tacked on two goals apiece in the third quarter as the Blue Hens pushed the advantage to 22-7 with 15 minutes remaining.
