Haynes Tosses Complete-Game Shutout to Lead Stony Brook Past Delaware 1-0 in Game 10 of CAA Softball Championship

HEMPSTEAD, N.Y. (May 12, 2023) – Riding the arm of Mia Haynes, seventh-seeded Stony Brook won its third straight elimination game, defeating top-seeded Delaware 1-0 in game 10 of the 2023 CAA Softball Championship on Friday afternoon from Bill Edwards Stadium.
 
The Seawolves (29-26) improve to 4-1 in their CAA Tournament debut, keeping their season alive for the third game in a row. Stony Brook will face No. 3 Hofstra in another elimination game at approximately 5:25 p.m., with the winner of the Battle for Long Island advancing to the 2023 CAA Championship game. The Blue Hens (29-20) see their season end after claiming a second straight CAA Regular Season title this spring. 


 
Haynes (19-8), who has tied the CAA Tournament record for appearances (5) and wins (4), recorded the complete-game shutout. The junior right-hander tossed 112 pitches, scattering three hits and striking out two. Haynes is 4-0 in the championship with a 1.47 ERA, throwing 567 pitches in 33.1 innings. 
 
Stony Brook scratched across the only run of the game in the top of the first, which proved enough for Haynes in the circle. Alyssa Costello bunted for a base hit with one out in the inning, recording her ninth hit in the tournament. Catherine Anne Kupinski was hit by a pitch to place runners on second and third before Delaware got the lead runner out on a fielder’s choice. Corrine Badger extended the inning with a two-out walk, and Kupinski scored on the second fielder’s choice of the inning courtesy of Naiah Ackerman. 
 
Delaware left two runners on base in the bottom half of the first after a two-out single from Kiara Mills, followed by a Brittney Mendoza walk. The Blue Hens' next best chance came in the fifth. Haynes retired 11 straight batters before Grace Hrustich drew a one-out walk. Grace Rudolph followed with a two-out walk, but Haynes induced a pop-out to end the threat. 
 
The Blue Hens loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the sixth, but Haynes was up for the challenge. She buckled down, getting a 5-2 ground out before a fly out to rightfield, stranding the bags full of Blue Hens and preserving the shutout. 
 
Costello’s bunt single in the first inning tied the CAA Tournament record for hits (9) and extended her hitting streak to 23 consecutive games. 
 
Emily Winburn, who entered in relief, tossed 5.0 innings of scoreless ball for the Blue Hens. The senior right-hander allowed just two hits and struck out two. Mills paced the Delaware lineup with a 2-for-3 effort, recording her 12th multi-hit game this season.
