Stony Brook Advances, Drexel’s Season Concludes in NCAA First Round

BALTIMORE and HARRISONBURG, Va. (May 12, 2023) – The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team took control late in the first half to get past Penn State, while Drexel fell to Maryland in NCAA Tournament First Round action hosted by Loyola Maryland and James Madison.
Stony Brook 12, Penn State 8
No. 10 Stony Brook scored the final three goals of the first half and opening two after the break to turn a 6-3 deficit into an 8-6 lead and never trailed again in the NCAA First Round at Ridley Athletic Complex.
Stony Brook (15-3) trailed 5-3 before outscoring No. 20 Penn State 9-3 over the final 33 minutes of the game to advance to the NCAA Second Round for the 10
th consecutive tournament.
Kailyn Hart and
Ellie Masera scored three goals each for the Seawolves and
Jaden Hampel and
Charlotte Verhulst tallied two each, while
Clare Levy notched three caused turnovers.
The Seawolves forced 15 Nittany Lion turnovers and held a 12-11 advantage on the draw.
Stony Brook will face No. 8 national seed Loyola on 2 p.m. Sunday in Baltimore; the game can be seen on ESPN+.
Maryland 11, Drexel 6
Drexel used a three-goal fourth quarter run to pull closer, but No. 11 Maryland held off the Dragons in the NCAA First Round at Sentara Park.
Drexel (12-6) received three goals from
Grace Harding, including two in the second half, but was unable to overcome a six-goal first quarter from the Terrapins.
Corinne Bednarik,
Hayleigh Simpson, and
Kate Marano added goals for the Dragons, while
Jenika Cuocco made 12 saves. Draws were even at 10 with Bednarik winning six and
Maura Cissel four.
