BALTIMORE (May 14, 2023) – The Stony Brook women’s lacrosse team narrowed a four-goal deficit to one in the closing minutes but couldn’t pull even, as the Seawolves fell 9-8 to No. 8 national seed Loyola in the NCAA Second Round at the Ridley Athletic Complex.

Kailyn Hart scored three times in the final 3:28 to get Stony Brook (15-4) within one – its closest since the early stages of the third quarter – and tallied all four Stony Brook goals in the final quarter.

The teams were tied at three in the second quarter before both sides scored in the final 30 seconds before the break, with Clare Levy’s goal off one of Ellie Masera’s three assists making it 4-4 at the half. Erin Macquarrie, Jaden Hampel, and Masera also added first half scores.

Loyola scored all four goals in the third quarter to extend its lead to 8-4 and answered Hart’s first of the fourth quarter to get to 9-5 with 8:06 play; the Greyhounds would not score again in the contest.

Stony Brook forced 19 Loyola turnovers in the contest; Ella Whitehouse recorded five caused turnovers and Masera three. Stony Brook was playing in its 10th consecutive NCAA Tournament and defeated four ranked opponents in 2023; the CAA notched six victories over top 25 foes this spring.
