TOWSON, Md. (May 6, 2023) – Top-seeded Stony Brook completed an unblemished run through its first year of CAA Women’s Lacrosse play, as the Seawolves followed a 7-0 regular season in the league with a convincing 19-4 victory over Towson in the conference title game at Tiger Field.

Ellie Masera tallied eight points on five goals and three assists along with seven draw controls on Saturday – to total 14 points and 19 draw controls for the two-game tournament – on her way to Most Outstanding Player honors. Kailyn Hart notched eight goals and three assists in the tournament with four goals in each contest.

Stony Brook struck for five goals in the game’s first 5:38 with two each from Hart and Masera and Jolie Creo adding one. The Seawolves scored on four of their first five shots in the contest, prompting a Towson timeout.

Charlotte Verhulst added the next two to extend the lead to 7-0 with 4:01 to play in the opening quarter before Milana Zizakovic got Towson on the board a minute later. Creo added another as time expired in the opening stanza for an 8-1 lead through 15 minutes.

Katie McCormick opened the scoring for Towson in the second quarter before Hart responded with her third of the day and Masera added her third to go in front 10-2 with 11:18 remaining before halftime. Morgan Mitchell added the next two to make it a 10-goal lead. Goals from Masera and Clare Levy closed the half at 14-2.

Isabella Germani scored the first goal out of the break and Hart added the next before Gabby Garrett tallied a goal for Towson to pull within 16-3. Mitchell, Alexandra Fusco, and Masera scored in the fourth quarter, with Masera’s goal breaking the title game team scoring record at 19-3 with 9:41 to play. Valerie Thompson scored for Towson with 8:08 remaining to close the scoring.

Stony Brook’s 19 goals broke the title game record of 18 by Towson in 2005; the mark was one shy of the record in any game in the Championship (20 by Loyola in the 1993 Quarterfinals.) The Seawolves’ 15-goal margin of victory was the largest in the final.

Stony Brook assisted on 12 of 19 goals with three others coming via free-position opportunities. The Seawolves held a 15-9 advantage on the draw; Hailey Duchnowski and Aaliyah Jones combined for six saves.

The Seawolves, along with potential at-large selections, will tune in for the 2023 NCAA Women’s Lacrosse Championship Selection Show on Sunday at 9 p.m. on ESPNU.
