RICHMOND, Va. (June 28, 2023) – North Carolina A&T sophomore
Reheem Hayles and Monmouth sophomore Evan Niedrowski took home top honors as four programs claimed major awards in the reveal of CAA Men’s Track and Field postseason accolades as voted on by the league’s head coaches.
Hayles claimed CAA Track Athlete of the Year honors, and Niedrowski was chosen as the CAA Field Athlete of the Year. In addition, William & Mary freshman Jordan Nwosu claimed CAA Rookie of the Year accolades, and Tramaine Shaw of Northeastern was pegged as the CAA Coach of the Year by her peers.
Hayles followed up a terrific indoor season with an even more impressive outdoor campaign. The sophomore sprinter was the only athlete in the conference to claim multiple All-America distinctions by earning First Team honors in the 400m and Second Team accolades on the A&T 4x400m relay. Hayles finished sixth nationally in the 400m with a personal-best time of 44.81 after helping the Aggies to a 13th-place finish and all-time CAA record in the 4x400m relay (3:02.62). In addition, Hayles won two gold medals and added a silver, scoring 20.5 points at the CAA Championship. The sophomore sprinter won the 400m (45.74) crown after anchoring the A&T 4x100m relay to a victory (40.46). He also finished second in the 200m (21.21). Hayles concluded the season ranked first in the conference in the 400m (44.81) and 200m (20.71).
Niedrowski earned Second Team All-America honors after finishing 12th in the javelin (71.85m) at the NCAA Championships. The sophomore thrower had a top-10 finish at the NCAA East Prelims two weeks earlier, finishing seventh in the competition. In addition, Niedrowski won the javelin (71.07m) title at his first CAA Championship, and earlier this spring, the sophomore broke the all-time CAA record with a personal-best mark of 74.20m (243-05.00). He was the only CAA athlete to throw over 70m in the event this season, accomplishing the feat on four occasions. Niedrowski joins teammate Dalton Yeust, who was named CAA Indoor Field Athlete of the Year this winter, as a major award winner for the Hawks in their inaugural CAA season.
Nwosu is the fourth CAA Rookie of the Year for the Tribe in the past five seasons and the ninth in program history. The freshman thrower tallied 18 points across three events at the CAA Championships and was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the meet. Nwosu won gold in the shot put (16.61m) while finishing fourth in the discus (45.71m) and placing sixth in the hammer throw (47.81m) at the conference championship. The freshman finished the spring top-five in the conference in the shot put (3rd) and discus (4th), recording personal-best marks of 16.81m (55-02.00) and 48.11m (157-10.00), respectively.
Shaw collects CAA Coach of the Year accolades for the fifth consecutive season after leading Northeastern to a conference record eighth straight CAA Men’s Outdoor Track and Field team title. At the conference championships, Northeastern earned 15 All-CAA finishes, including a league-best six individual champions. In addition, the Huskies had five individual qualifiers for the NCAA East Preliminary, matching the most in the league. Furthermore, Ethan Exilhomme advanced to Nationals in the 110m hurdles, marking the third consecutive season Shaw has coached an athlete to the NCAA Championships.
