The Weekend Preview – Aug. 31, 2023

RICHMOND, Va. (Aug. 31, 2023) – CAA cross country and golf teams begin their 2023-24 seasons, while men’s soccer opens league play, challenging tests await in soccer and field hockey, and a 35-match volleyball weekend adds to the weekend's entertainment.
 
Cross Country
Labor Day weekend brings the opening weekend of NCAA cross country. Twelve CAA programs will begin their 2023 campaigns this weekend. The four-time defending CAA champions on the women’s side, Elon, will host an invitational on Friday, where they welcome Campbell, North Carolina A&T and UNCW to town. Three conference teams – Delaware, Hampton and William & Mary – will open the fall at the 2023 CAA Cross Country Championships site, competing in the Spider Alumni Open hosted by Richmond. In addition, Charleston, Monmouth, Northeastern, Stony Brook and Towson start the year at local competitions.   
 
Golf
Two CAA men’s golf programs will tee off to begin the season on Sunday, as Delaware and William & Mary take part in the Red Bandana Invitational, hosted by Boston College at Turning Stone Resort in Central New York. The Blue Hens finished third in the event last year when it was hosted by Missouri.
 
Men’s Soccer
Eight CAA programs begin conference play on Saturday with three of four games in the Carolinas. Charleston opens the day by hosting Drexel (1 p.m., FloFC), Elon visits Stony Brook (2 p.m., FloFC), Delaware – off to its best start since 2016 – is at Campbell (5 p.m.), and UNCW closes out the night at home against Northeastern (7 p.m., FloFC).
 
Non-conference highlights of the weekend include a Thursday matinee in Williamsburg when William & Mary hosts No. 19 New Hampshire (1 p.m., FloFC). Monmouth is at St. John’s on Friday night (7 p.m., ESPN+) while Hofstra is at Providence (7 p.m., FloFC); the Pride hosts a Penn side receiving votes in the coaches poll on Monday night in Hempstead (7 p.m., MSG, FloFC). | Weekend Schedule  
 
Women’s Soccer
The final weekend of non-conference play features a pair of games against ranked opponents and three against Big Ten and SEC competition. Thursday’s eight-game slate is highlighted by Elon’s visit to No. 13 South Carolina (7 p.m., SECN+) and the league’s two undefeated teams at home, as 3-0-0 Towson hosts UMBC (6 p.m., FloFC) and 2-0-2 William & Mary welcomes old friend George Mason (7 p.m., FloFC). Delaware opens the day at home against Saint Francis (4 p.m., FloFC) and Charleston is also at home for a match against Mercer (7 p.m., FloFC), while Stony Brook (at Fordham, 6 p.m., MSG, ESPN+), Hofstra (at FDU, 7 p.m., NECFR), and UNCW (at East Carolina, 7 p.m., ESPN+) face local foes on the road.
 
Twelve teams will play tune-ups for league play on Sunday with six kicking off at 1 p.m.: Monmouth is at No. 6 Penn State (BTN+), Towson visits Maryland (BTN+), Hofstra hosts Saint Joseph’s (MSGSN, FloFC), UNCW welcomes Queens (FloFC), Drexel visits UMass Lowell (ESPN+) and Charleston heads to Georgia Southern (ESPN+). Delaware will host Richmond at 2 p.m. (FloFC) and Campbell takes on Davidson, while the four-game evening slate is full of local competition, with Northeastern hosting Boston University (6 p.m., NESN+, FloFC), William & Mary heading over to Old Dominion (6 p.m., ESPN+), and Elon welcoming in UNCG (7 p.m., FloFC), while Hampton travels out to Radford (7 p.m., ESPN+). | Weekend Schedule  
 
Field Hockey
CAA Field Hockey got its first win over a nationally ranked opponent last weekend, and there are two more opportunities this weekend. On Friday, Monmouth travels to No. 8 Syracuse (4 p.m., ACCNX), facing its second top-15 foe in as many weeks. The Hawks are looking for three wins over five days after defeating Rider on Wednesday and visiting Sacred Heart (3 p.m., NECFR) on Sunday. In addition, William & Mary will face its first top-20 opponent this fall, traveling to No. 12 Wake Forest at 5 p.m. (ACCNX) on Friday. W&M had the most wins (3) over nationally ranked teams in 2022. Delaware, which knocked off No. 18 Old Dominion last week, returns to Newark for its home opener, hosting Villanova (5 p.m., FloLive) on Friday before entertaining Columbia on Sunday (1 p.m., FloLive). | Weekend Schedule  
 
Volleyball
We see your 31 CAA Volleyball matches opening weekend and raise you 35 more this weekend. Hofstra (4-0) and Delaware (3-0) enter the weekend unbeaten, both off to their best starts since 2016. The Pride and Blue Hens hit the road for the first time this fall, putting their unblemished records on the line. Hofstra travels to the UConn Tournament, where they open against the host Huskies at 7 p.m. on Friday. Meanwhile, Delaware heads to the Lone Star State for the Roadrunner Classic, headlined by a matchup with UTSA an hour later. Towson earned its program’s first win over an SEC team, defeating South Carolina in its season opener. The Tigers are the lone team at home this weekend, playing five matches in four days, hosting the Towson Invitational. Towson's matches on Friday vs. FDU (7 p.m.), Saturday vs. Dartmouth (12 p.m.,) and Sunday against Rider (1 p.m.) will be televised on Monumental Sports Network in addition to FloVolleyball. | Weekend Schedule
