RICHMOND, Va. (September 14, 2023) – CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio has announced the hiring of Tom Honec as the conference’s Coordinator of Baseball Umpires.

Honec brings extensive experience to the position, having umpired at the collegiate and minor league levels for 15 years. Since 2021, he has worked for Major League Baseball as a Manager for Umpire Operations.

“We are pleased to welcome Tom Honec to the CAA as the new Coordinator of Baseball Umpires,” CAA Commissioner Joe D’Antonio said. “His extensive experience on the field, coupled with his experience in evaluating, supervising, teaching and developing umpires make him the perfect fit for the position.”

Honec currently works with the Major League Baseball Umpire Development Program and the Substitute Umpire Program. In that role, he has elevated top-performing collegiate umpires to substitute roles in professional baseball and provided them with on-field training opportunities during the summer months. Honec has used emerging technologies in baseball scouting and performance analysis to enhance umpire training.

From 2016-21, Honec worked with Minor League Baseball, evaluating and supervising umpires throughout the Minor League system. He administered, recruited, and trained umpires at the Minor League Baseball Umpire Training Academy. Honec has also served as a Major League Baseball Umpire Camps instructor for several years.

On the field, Honec worked as an umpire at the collegiate level from 2007-21, officiating games in the CAA, ACC, Atlantic 10, Big Ten, Big 12, Big East and Conference USA. He was selected to umpire at NCAA Division I Regionals three times and worked a Super Regional in 2021. Honec served as an umpire at the CAA Baseball Championship from 2016-21.

Honec replaces John Porter, who retired as the CAA’s Coordinator of Baseball Umpires after more than two decades of service to the conference.
