RICHMOND, Va. (Sept. 14, 2023) – Conference play begins in CAA field hockey and volleyball and heats up in soccer, while fall competition continues in cross country and golf.
Field Hockey
CAA play gets underway in field hockey on Friday, with three conference matches on the docket. At 3 p.m., Hofstra entertains No. 19 Delaware (FloLive), and Towson hosts William & Mary (FloLive) simultaneously. The Blue Hens begin their title defense against the Pride, who they have beaten in nine straight matchups. Meanwhile, the Tribe has maintained the momentum in its series with Towson, winning 10 of the past 11; however, the Tigers are off to their best start (3-2) since 2010 and ended a nine-game losing streak to W&M two years ago. The 4 p.m. contest features an intriguing matchup between Monmouth hosting Drexel (FloLive). The Hawks defeated Drexel last season en route to a CAA Regular Season title, but the teams have split the past six matches, alternating wins dating back to 2016. The Dragons are off to a hot start, leading the CAA in scoring margin (+2.45) and have their best start to a season since 2018.
Fast forward to Sunday, all four non-conference matches are tests against top 20 opponents. At 11 a.m., William & Mary host No. 10 Liberty, who they upset on the road last season. At noon, Drexel faces its first nationally ranked adversary this fall, entertaining No. 20 UAlbany (FloLive). The afternoon wraps up at 1 p.m., with No. 19 Delaware visiting No. 13 Saint Joseph’s and Northeastern heading to No. 15 Harvard (ESPN+). |
Weekend Schedule
Volleyball
Conference play is among us in CAA Volleyball. All 12 teams begin league play with six matches on Saturday and Sunday. The four-time defending champions, Towson, opens on the road against Hampton, while Delaware, off to its best start (7-1) since 2007, breaks in CAA newcomer Campbell in Newark. Another team off to a hot start, Hofstra (10-1), will host Elon. The teams did not face in conference play last fall, and despite the Pride maintaining a 10-5 advantage in the series, the Phoenix has won three straight matchups. Also, on Long Island, Stony Brook hosts Northeastern. The Huskies took both matchups from the Seawolves last season, playing head-to-head for the first time since 2004. Heading south, Charleston visits William & Mary while North Carolina A&T travels to UNCW. The Cougars took both contests against W&M last fall and maintain a 16-3 advantage in the all-time series. A&T and UNCW played two thrilling five-set matches in 2022, with the Aggies edging the Seahawks in both. Watch 11 of the 12 contests on FloVolleyball. |
