RICHMOND, Va. (Jan. 9, 2024) – The CAA has announced its third indoor track and field weekly awards for the 2023-24 season. Hampton claimed three honors out of the holiday break as freshman Arriah Gilmer was named CAA Women’s Track Athlete of the Week, junior Oluwatomilayo Akintunde earned CAA Women’s Field Athlete of the Week honors, and freshman Antoine Spencer collected CAA Men’s Track Athlete of the Week accolades.
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Arriah Gilmer, Hampton
Freshman | Sprints | Twinsburg, Ohio / Twinsburg
Gilmer began her collegiate career with a victory in the 400m at the VCU Rams Indoor Invitational. The freshman from Twinsburg, Ohio ran 59.24 to take first place in the 400m final before competing on the 4x400m relay (4:06.6) squad for the Lady Pirates.
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Oluwatomilayo Akintunde, Hampton
Junior | Throws | Hamburg, N.J. / Wallkill Valley HS
Akintunde opened her indoor season with a victory in the shot put at the VCU Rams Indoor Invitational. The junior won the event with a mark of 15.00m (49-02.50), a throw that ranks first in the CAA this season and 18th in the NCAA. In addition, she competed in the weight throw, recording a mark of 15.43m (50-07.50) to place sixth.
MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Antoine Spencer, Hampton
Freshman | Sprints | Waldorf, Md. / High Point
Spencer won the 200m dash in his first collegiate meet at the VCU Rams Indoor Invitational. The freshman from Waldorf, Md. posted a time of 21.86 to win the event. The mark ranks second in the conference this season and 40th nationally. His collegiate debut continued with an eighth-place finish in the 60m dash (7.00) and concluded with a second-place finish as part of Hampton’s 4x400m (3:20.53) relay team.
