Northeastern Wins First CAA Women's Cross Country Championship As Hassman Claims Third Straight Individual Title

ELON, N.C. (November 1, 2024) – Northeastern had three runners finish in the top nine and claimed its first-ever CAA Women’s Cross Country Championship on Friday morning at the Elon Cross Country Course.

Leading the way for the Huskies was graduate student Abigail Hassman, who became the first runner in conference history to earn three consecutive individual titles with a winning time of 20:08.1. Hampton freshman Peninah Mutisya placed second with a time of 20:23.6.

Northeastern finished with 44 points to take the top spot as William & Mary came in second with 54 points and five-time defending champion Elon took third with 63 points. Finishing fourth was Stony Brook (106 points) followed by Charleston (149 points), Monmouth (174 points), Delaware (175 points), Towson (264 points), Hampton (264 points), Hofstra (314 points), Campbell (322 points), UNCW (338 points) and North Carolina A&T (386 points).
 


Northeastern, which had placed second in three of the past four years, used a strong all-around performance to capture its first trophy. In addition to Hassman, Azza Borovicka-Swanson (20:45.7) finished fourth and Ava Duggan (21:20.3) placed ninth. Rounding out the scoring for NU were Lena Lebrun (21:27.2) in 13th and Nicole Dunbury (21:34.2) in 17th.

William & Mary recorded its best finish since 2018 after being the only team with five runners in the top 15. Senior Arianna DeBoer (21:13.5) led the way in seventh, followed by Kyra Holland (21:18) in eighth, Catherine Garrison (21:21.2) in 10th, Sofia Istnick (21:29.6) in 14th and Molly Weithman (21:30.1) in 15th.

Elon had three runners among the top 12 individual finishers. Placing fifth was senior Mikayla Jones (20:52.4), followed by Hannah Weber in 11th (21:21.5) and Abigail Beville in 12th (21:22.8). Also contributing for the Phoenix were Madison Synowiec (21:30.9) in 16th and Sarah Petitjean (21:38.0) in 19th.

The top 15 individual finishers received All-CAA honors. Joining the runners from the top three teams were Hampton’s Mutisya, Stony Brook’s Grace Weigele (20:41.0), who placed third, and Monmouth’s Emily Simko (21:08.0), who finished sixth.
