Stony Brook Captures Third Straight CAA Men's Cross Country Title In Closest Finish In League History

ELON, N.C. (November 1, 2024) – In the closest team finish in conference history, Stony Brook captured the 2024 CAA Men’s Cross Country Championship on Friday morning at the Elon Cross Country Course. It was the third straight title for the Seawolves, who scored 48 points and edged second-place Northeastern (49 points) by a single point.

Northeastern senior Benjamin Godish claimed the individual title for the second straight year, posting a winning time of 24:11.40. He ran shoulder-to-shoulder with Hofstra junior Abraham Longosiwa for the first 6,000 meters before pulling away on the final loop. Longosiwa placed second with a time of 24:22.20.

Stony Brook and Northeastern were followed in the team standings by William & Mary (54 points), Monmouth (110 points), Elon (127 points), Hofstra (167 points), Charleston (214 points), Campbell (248 points), North Carolina A&T (276 points), UNCW (286 points) and Hampton (302 points).
 


Stony Brook used the depth of its roster to take the top spot as five runners finished in the top 17, including three in the top eight. Sophomore Henry Gartner (24:44.50) led the Seawolves with a fourth-place effort followed by Collin Gilstrap in fifth (24:48.3) and Steven Struk in eighth (25:02.50). Also scoring for SBU were Michael Hawkes (25:19.9) in 14th and Ethan Green (25:34.7) in 17th.

Northeastern placed second for the 11th time in the last 12 years. In addition to Godish’s winning performance, Tyler Brogan placed seventh (24:59.1) and Kyle Sarney was 10th (25:11.1). Rounding out the scoring for the Huskies were Ryan Leslie in 15th (25:20.6) and Nico Boyle in 16th (25:26.6).

William & Mary also turned in a strong performance with four runners in the top 12. Topping the Tribe was third-place finisher Hayes Trapp (24:42.1), followed by Carson Rackley in ninth (25:09.9), Nate Jennings in 11th (25:14.5) and Brendan DiStefano in 12th (25:15.1). Luke Ellwood (25:42.1) capped the scoring with a 19th-place finish.

The top 15 individual finishers received All-CAA honors. Joining the runners from the top three teams were Hofstra’s Longosiwa, Monmouth’s Declan McDonnell (24:51.6) in sixth and Elon’s Evan Taylor (25:18.1) in 13th.
