RICHMOND, Va. (December 12, 2024) – Northeastern graduate student Abigail Hassman was chosen as the CAA Women’s Cross Country Runner of the Year for the third consecutive season, becoming the first in conference history to achieve that feat.

Joining Hassman as major award winners were Hampton freshman Peninah Mutisya, who was selected as the CAA Women’s Cross Country Rookie of the Year, and Northeastern’s Tramaine Shaw, who earned CAA Women’s Cross Country Coach of the Year accolades for the first time. The awards were determined by a vote of the league’s head coaches.

Hassman became the first runner to ever claim three individual titles at the CAA Women’s Cross Country Championship on November 1, posting a winning time of 20:08.1. She followed with an 11th-place performance (20”09.44) at the NCAA Northeast Regionals, earning All-Region honors for the third time. That effort capped an outstanding career for Hassman, who became the first woman in Northeastern history to qualify for the NCAA Cross Country Championship in 2023.

Mutisya made a huge impact in her first season at Hampton. The freshman placed second at the CAA Championship with a time of 20:23.6, which was the highest finish by a Pirates’ runner at a conference championship since 2017. She was the top CAA finisher at the NCAA Southeast Regional, placing 27th with a time of 21:20.6. Mutisya won individual titles this season in races hosted by Richmond, Christopher Newport and East Carolina.

Shaw guided Northeastern to its first-ever CAA Women’s Cross Country Championship. The Huskies had three runners finish in the top nine and won the title by 10 points after posting three second-place finishes in the past four years.

The top 15 finishers from the CAA Championship were recognized as all-conference performers. Those honorees are listed in alphabetical order.
