CAA Men’s Lacrosse Weekly Awards – Feb. 19

RICHMOND, Va. (Feb. 12, 2024) – The CAA has announced its men’s lacrosse weekly awards for the week of Feb. 12 through Feb. 19. Towson picked up two weekly awards after earning its 500
th win in program history as graduate attackman Nick DeMaio was named CAA Offensive Player of the Week and junior goalkeeper Luke Downs earned CAA Defensive Player of the Week honors. In addition, Delaware freshman John McCurry collected CAA Rookie of the Week accolades.
OFFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Nick DeMaio, Towson
Graduate | Attack | San Diego, Calif. / Coronado
DeMaio recorded nine points on four goals and five assists, leading Towson to a 17-5 victory over Navy, who was receiving votes in all three national polls. The nine points are a career-best for the graduate attackman, who became the first Tiger with nine points in a game since 2019. DeMaio registered four goals on five shots for his second straight hat trick while dishing out a season-high five assists, matching the most in a game by a CAA student-athlete this season.
DEFENSIVE PLAYER OF THE WEEK
Luke Downs, Towson
Junior | Goalkeeper | Sykesville, Md. / Calvert Hall
Downs led a Towson defensive effort, which held the fifth-ranked scoring offense in the NCAA to five goals as the Tigers handed Navy its first loss this season. The junior goalkeeper made 11 saves in 16 attempts, posting a .688 save percentage while adding three ground balls. The 11 saves were a career-high for Downs, who recorded his second double-digit save effort this spring.
ROOKIE OF THE WEEK
John McCurry, Delaware
Freshman | Attack | Wall, N.J. / Wall HS
Wall tallied four points on three goals and one assist, helping Delaware start the season 2-0 with a 17-6 victory over St. John’s. Not only did the freshman record his first career hat trick – scoring all three goals in the second quarter – but his tally in the 17th minute was his first collegiate goal. His second-quarter effort helped the Blue Hens to a 12-3 halftime lead before the rookie registered his first career assist in the third quarter.
