Women
Elon became the first track & field program in conference history to complete the triple crown that season, aided by claiming the inaugural women’s CAA Indoor Track & Field title. The Phoenix completed the first leg of the triple crown again this season, winning its fourth straight CAA Cross Country title in October.
Kaitlin McGoogan is the lone Elon student-athlete with a league-leading mark this winter, entering the championship ranked first in the weight throw (19.17m). In addition,
Jette Beerman, the only Phoenix individual champion last year, looks to defend her title in the mile, seeded third (4:43.87) in the conference this season.
The Lady Pirates made things interesting in 2023 as Hampton finished runner-up at the indoor and outdoor championships in its first CAA season. Hampton was second by just eight points indoors last season and is one of the contenders looking to dethrone the defending champs. The Lady Pirates have the league’s top three marks in the shot put this season, led by
Abria Smith, who broke the HU program record (15.24m). Hampton also enters the championship with the top-seeded 4x400m relay (3:43.41), and its anchor leg,
Dejah Grant, ranks top-five in the CAA in the 400m (55.45).
Northeastern, who led after day one last year and finished third indoors, enters 2024 with five league-leading marks, the most in the conference.
Dominique Biron and
Abigail Hassman look to defend individual titles in the pentathlon and 5000m, respectively. Biron – the conference record holder in the pentathlon – has the top mark in the event (4,062 pts) this season. Meanwhile, Hassman has set conference records in the 3000m (9:09.68) and 5000m (15:56.99) this winter. Furthermore,
Mia Belanger and
Ava Duggan hold the conference’s top marks in the high jump (1.76m) and mile (4:38.87), respectively.
North Carolina A&T rounded out the top four team finishers at last year’s indoor championship in their inaugural CAA season. The Aggies have two returners from 2023 who have league-leading marks entering Thursday.
Fajr Kelly broke her former teammate's conference record in the 800m (2:06.56), and
Lucheyona Weaver, the defending 60m hurdles champion, matched her former teammate's CAA record in the hurdles (8.19) this winter.
In addition, CAA track and field will have lots more orange and black this weekend. Campbell was the runner-up at the 2023 Big South Indoor Track and Field Championships and should be an instant contender in the CAA. The Fighting Camels have three student-athletes who ranked first in the conference in their respective events, two of whom broke conference records during the regular season.
Chastity Pickett was the Big South Indoor Championship MVP in 2023 after winning the 60m, 60m hurdles and 200m. Pickett has the league’s top mark in the 200m (23.69) this season. Additionally,
Jaidyn Ramsey ranks first in the 60m (7.33) and
Brianna Clayton tops the performance list in the 400m (54.77).
Men
Northeastern is the team to beat in the men’s team race. The Huskies won the inaugural CAA Indoor Track and Field Championships and have won eight consecutive titles outdoors. Northeastern has the conference’s top marks in five events this season.
Ethan Exilhomme looks to defend his title in the 60m hurdles after breaking the conference record (7.60) earlier this season.
Benjamin Godish holds top marks in the mile (3:57.43) and 3000m (8:01.96) and looks to repeat in the 3K.
Alexander Korczynski - the 2022 CAA Outdoor Track Athlete of the Year - holds the top time in the 5000m (13:53.57), making his CAA indoor debut. Finally,
Athanasios Pantazopoulos is the top seed in the pole vault (4.85m).
The biggest threat to the dominant run appears to be the new kids on the block. Campbell was the 2022 Big South Indoor Track and Field Champion and finished runner-up in 2023, led by two-time reigning Big South Coach of the Year
Virgil Givens. The Fighting Camels have set four conference records and own the top marks in five events this season.
C.J. McBride was the MVP and MOP of the 2023 Big South Indoor Championships and made an instant impression in the CAA, shattering conference records in the high jump (2.16m) and triple jump (15.60m). In addition,
Jamal Miller has the league’s best time in the 60m (6.64), and his brother,
Jamel, is seeded first in the 400m (46.88), while
Dominique Alexander tops the ranks in the 200m (20.88).
Monmouth led after day one in 2023 and finished runner-up in the team race. The Hawks are hungry for more after finishing second indoors and outdoors in their first CAA season. Monmouth is deep in the field events and has two student-athletes with top marks entering Thursday.
Isaiah Battle leads the way in the weight throw (18.79m), and
Jan Volkmar ranks first in the heptathlon (4,978 pts). In addition, the Hawks look to defend their title in the DMR, owning the league’s top time (9:52.25) this winter.
