Northeastern Men and Women Lead After Day One of the 2024 CAA Indoor Track & Field Championships

NEW YORK, N.Y (Feb. 22, 2024) – The Northeastern University men’s and women’s track and field programs are first place in the team standings at the conclusion of day one at the 2024 CAA Indoor Track and Field Championships.
Ten meet records fell on Thursday at The Armory in New York City, including six in the running prelims, and 11 CAA Champions got crowned. On the women’s side, Northeastern had two individual champions and accumulated 49 team points, while the defending champs followed, as Elon tallied 44 points after two gold-medal efforts. Charleston sits in third with 25 points, followed closely by Hampton in fourth with 23 points and William & Mary rounding out the top five with 22 points.
For the men, Northeastern secured two event victories and 47 points to edge Monmouth, who collected 44 points and one first-place finish. North Carolina A&T is third with 29 points, followed by Stony Brook in fourth (25) and Campbell (16.5) in fifth.
Pentathlon
Northeastern went one-two in the pentathlon, and Dominique Biron defended her league crown. Biron – who has won three straight CAA titles in the heptathlon – collected the sixth CAA title of her prestigious career with 3,956 points across five events on Thursday. Additionally, Kennedee Cox of Northeastern finished runner-up in the event for the second straight season, posting a personal-best 3,675 points. Hampton’s Emmani Shaw rounded out the podium in third place, recording a PR with 3,492 points.
Men’s Pole Vault
Dalton Yeust won back-to-back titles in the men’s pole vault, and Monmouth had three of the top four finishers in the event, scoring 21 team points. Yeust cleared 4.85m (15-11.00) to win gold, and his teammate, Connor Bennett, took third with a mark of 4.65m (15-03.00). Athanasios Pantazopoulos of Northeastern split the duo on the podium, taking second with a vault of 4.75m (15-07.00).
Women’s Long Jump
Courtney Lines from UNCW defended her crown in the women’s high jump as the top six competitors in the event recorded season-best marks. Lines – who has won back-to-back indoor and outdoor titles – popped a 6.17m (20-03.00) on her third attempt to win the event. Biron from Northeastern recorded an indoor PR of 6.11m (20-00.50) to take second, while Campbell’s Destiny Bailey-Perkins and Hampton’s Maya Hanks tied for third with a mark of 6.04m (19-09.75).
Women’s Weight Throw
Elon took two of the top three places in the women’s weight throw, scoring 16 points behind a first-place effort from Lauryn Carlton. The senior, who placed fifth last season, won the event with a season-best throw of 18.34m (60-02.00). Carlton was followed by Hampton’s Abria Smith, throwing 18.30m (60-00.50) for a new PR, and Kaitlin McGoogan finished third for Elon, recording a mark of 17.90m (58-08.75).
Men’s Long Jump
The top seven student-athletes surpassed the previous meet record in an exciting men’s long jump competition. The top six recorded a personal record or season-best mark, and the podium finishers were separated by just five centimeters. Aeneas Reed of North Carolina A&T won the event with a leap of 7.34m (24-01.00) on his fifth try, narrowly edging Hofstra’s Nile Love in second, who had a personal-best mark of 7.33m (24-00.75) on his last attempt. Kaleb Lucas from A&T joined his teammate on the podium with a PR on his final attempt by jumping 7.29m (23-11.00).
Women’s Pole Vault
Luzy Lieger – who broke the conference record in the pole vault last weekend – repeated as CAA Champion on Thursday. The graduate student further etched her name in the record books, improving her meet record from last season with a clearance of 4.00m (13-01.50). Campbell’s Lakelyn Bass finished runner-up, clearing 3.90m (12-09.50) to edge Tonet Tallie on misses, who also vaulted 3.90m for a season-best mark.
Men’s Weight Throw
Nicholas Pisciotta of Northeastern went back-to-back in the men’s weight throw and reset his meet record from last year with a personal-best throw of 18.86m (61-10.50). Qualiar Newton of North Carolina A&T finished runner-up, recording a PR of 18.60m (61-00.25), ahead of Monmouth’s Isaiah Battle, rounding out the podium with a throw of 18.57m (60-11.25).
Men’s 5000m
Stony Brook showed out in the first running final of the day, racking up 21 points and placing four inside the top eight. Carlos Santos repeated as CAA Champion in the 5K, lowering his meet record from last season to 14:03.60. His teammate, Evan Brennan, placed third, crossing in a season-best 14:05.35 behind Patrick Cullen of Northeastern, who took silver in 14:04.61.
Women’s 5000m
Abigail Hassman added to her trophy case on Thursday, repeating as CAA Champion in the women’s 5K. The two-time defending CAA Cross Country Champion won the 5000m indoors by crossing in 15:59.22 to lower her meet record. Stony Brook finished consecutively in second and third as Fiona McLaughlin recorded a personal-best 16:25.47 and Grace Weigele crossed the tape in 16:29.64.
Men’s Distance Medley Relay
Northeastern secured its day-one lead by knocking off Monmouth in the men’s distance medley relay. The Huskies’ team of Ryan Gruczka, Johnny Emmanuel, Joseph Thumann and Kyle Sarney ran 9:57.17 to win gold. Monmouth, who won the event last year, finished second in 9:58.79, and William & Mary rounded out the podium with a run of 9:59.83.
Women’s Distance Medley Relay
The defending team champions put themselves in a prime position to defend their title tomorrow as Elon capped off day one with a victory in the women’s distance medley relay to climb within five points of the leader in the clubhouse. Hannah Miller, Meghan Wilcox, Alison Hodgson and Leandra Lorenz comprised the winning Phoenix team, which posted a time of 11:41.27. William & Mary and Charleston rounded out the podium, finishing second (11:44.54) and third (11:48.99), respectively.
