Northeastern Wins Second Consecutive CAA Men’s Indoor Track & Field Title

NEW YORK, N.Y. (Feb. 23, 2024)
– The Northeastern University men’s track and field program won its second consecutive CAA Indoor Track and Field team title on Friday at the Armory in New York City. 
 
The Huskies had nine All-CAA performances on Friday, including six event champions, to accumulate 153 points in the team race. North Carolina A&T made a fierce run at the title on the second day but fell short, scoring 146 points in second place. The Aggies also had nine all-conference efforts on Friday, with two claiming gold. Monmouth rounded out the top three with 119 points ahead of Campbell by half a point in fourth. 
 
Ben Godish of Northeastern was pivotal to Northeastern's team victory by doubling in mile and 3000m on Friday. As a result, Godish was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer of the Championship. 
 
CJ McBride of Campbell, who won the triple jump and high jump, setting meet records in both events, was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer of the meet.  
 
Men’s Mile
Godish – the 2023 CAA Cross Country Champion – was crowned CAA Champion in the mile after setting a new meet record in 4:03.80. Stony Brook’s Collin Gilstrap finished second, crossing in 4:04.11, narrowly ahead of another Husky, as Patrick Cantlon placed third, running 4:04.33.
 


Men’s 60m Hurdles
North Carolina A&T swept the podium in the men’s 60m hurdles as Jason Holmes ran the fifth-fastest time in the NCAA this season, breaking the meet record in 7.65. Holmes, who placed third last season, was followed by his teammates Aveon Reid with a personal-best 7.71 in second and Isaiah Taylor, running 7.97 in third. 
 
Men’s 400m
Stony Brook freshman Evan Franks made his debut at the CAA Championships noteworthy, winning the men’s 400m with a personal-best time of 46.76. Shemar Chambers of North Carolina A&T finished runner-up for the second straight season, posting a time of 46.92. Campbell’s Jamel Miller rounded out the podium, finishing third in 47.68. 
 
Men’s 60m 
The podium finishers were separated by just four one-thousandths of a second in the men’s 60m dash. Ethan Exilhomme of Northeastern got the lean at the tape, winning the event in 6.69 for a new PR and meet record. Campbell’s Hayden Cobbs and Jamal Miller followed in second and third, respectively. Cobbs ran a personal-best 6.71, just ahead of Miller in 6.73. 
 
Men’s 800m
Northeastern pulled away from the field in the men’s 800m, placing first, second and fourth to score 23 points. Kerem Ayhan led the pack of Huskies, winning the event in 1:49.36. He was followed by his teammate Tyler Brogan, collecting silver in 1:51.23. Jonathan Kumar of William & Mary prevented the Northeastern sweep, finishing third in 1:51.50.
 
Men’s 200m
It was a Campbell sweep in the men’s 200m as Dominique Alexander won the event in a meet-record 20.90. He was followed by Jamel Miller, who posted a season-best time of 21.06, and Ja’Darien Parker, crossing in 21.29 to take third. 
 
Men’s 3000m
Godish doubled back to take gold in the men’s 3000m, leading three Huskies in the top sixth. Northeastern placed first, second, fourth and sixth in the event, scoring 26 points to clinch the team title. Godish ran 8:14.84, followed by Alexander Korczynski in second at 8:15.92. Shane Henderson broke up the Northeastern sweep, crossing third in 8:16.08. 
 
Men’s High Jump
McBride cleared 2.09m (6-10.25) in the high jump to reset the meet record and take gold. The senior holds the CAA meet and all-time record in the event indoors. Kendrell Goods of North Carolina A&T placed second with a clearance of 2.03m (6-08.00), followed by Campbell’s Kaleb Johnson in third, jumping 2.00m (6-06.75). 
 
Men’s Shot Put
North Carolina A&T took first and third in the men’s shot put, and Brayden Hodgest defended his title in the event. The junior posted a season-best throw of 16.93m (55-06.50) to win his second straight CAA title. Carlos Alexander joined his teammate on the podium, finishing third with a mark of 16.35m (53-07.75). Monmouth’s AJ Bailor split the A&T duo, earning a second-place finish with a PR of 16.67m (54-08.25). 
 
Men’s Triple Jump
McBride of Campbell broke the meet record in the triple jump, winning the event on his final attempt of the competition. McBride sat in third place until he popped a 15.25m (50-00.50) on his sixth attempt to take the gold medal. North Carolina A&T placed second and third as Joseph Palmer leaped 15.04m (49-04.25), and Xavier Partee recorded a mark of 14.59m (47-10.50). 
 
Heptathlon
Brian Walsh became the second straight William & Mary student-athlete to win gold in the heptathlon. Walsh accumulated a conference record of 5,173 points across seven events to place first. The Monmouth duo of Jan Volkmar and David Strong finished second (5,072 pts) and third (4,844 pts), respectively, as all three surpassed the previous meet record.
 
Men’s 4x800m Relay
Northeastern defended its title in the 4x800m relay, recording a winning time of 7:35.74. The Huskies’ team was comprised of Anders Narita, Cantlon, James Pothier, and Brogan. Monmouth finished second in 7:36.14, and North Carolina A&T placed third, finishing in 7:37.41. 
 
Men’s 4x400m Relay 
North Carolina A&T went back-to-back in the 4x400m relay, continuing its prestige at the 400-meter distance. The Aggies won the event in 3:10.07 with the team of Xzaviah Taylor, Chambers, Reid and Taylor. Campbell narrowly finished runner-up with a time of 3:10.32, while Northeastern capped off its team title, finishing third in 3:14.16.
