RICHMOND, Va. (February 6, 2024) – The CAA has announced its top freshmen performers for the month of January in swimming and diving. UNCW freshman William Carrico was named Men’s Rookie Swimmer of the Month, and Stony Brook freshman Sylvia Walker received Women’s Rookie Swimmer of the Month accolades. Towson freshman Grady Gardner was selected as the Men’s Rookie Diver of the Month and Delaware freshman Kiera Allison was chosen as the Women’s Rookie Diver of the Month.
 
CAA Men’s Rookie Swimmer of the Month
William Carrico, Fr., UNCW (Durham, N.H.)
 
Carrico posted impressive performances in UNCW’s meets against Davidson and NC State. The freshman recorded a time of 1:58.90 in the 200 breast at NC State, which is the 4th-fastest in the CAA this season. His time of 3:55.78 in the 400 IM against Davidson, which is faster than any other swimmer in the conference thus far. Carrico added a second-place finish in the 200 free (1:42.01) vs. Davidson.
 
CAA Women’s Rookie Swimmer of the Month
Sylvia Walker, Fr., Stony Brook (Greenville, S.C.)

Walker won six individual events, three relays and set two pool records during three January dual meets. The freshman set pool records against Wagner with first-place efforts in the 50 free (23.88) and 100 free (51.68). For the month, she placed first twice in the 50 and 100 free and won the 200 free and 200 IM. Walker was also part of winning teams in the 200 medley and 400 free relay teams.

CAA Men’s Rookie Diver of the Month
Grady Gardner, Fr., Towson (Ardmore, Pa.)
 
Gardner registered podium finishes in Towson’s meets against Howard and Drexel. The freshman placed third in the 1-meter competition against Howard with a score of 232.25, which ranks 10th in the CAA. He was also third on the 3-meter board vs. Drexel with a score of 225.08, which also is 10th-best in the conference.
 
CAA Women’s Rookie Diver of the Month
Kiera Allison, Fr., Delaware (North Wales, Pa.)
 
Allison turned in several strong performances to help Delaware post a 3-0 dual meet record in January. The freshman posted a score of 240.60 on the 3-meter board and 248.48 on the 1-meter board against Seton Hall. She also had fourth-place effort on the 1-meter board vs. Towson with a score of 231.15.
