CAA Outdoor Track & Field Weekly Awards – March 19

RICHMOND, Va. (March 19, 2024) – The CAA has announced its first outdoor track and field weekly awards for the 2024 spring season. On the women’s side, Towson junior sprinter Cristal Cuervo was named CAA Track Athlete of the Week, and UNCW graduate jumper Courtney Lines received CAA Field Athlete of the Week accolades. For the men, Stony Brook freshman sprinter George Franks collected CAA Track Athlete of the Week honors, and William & Mary sophomore thrower Jason Nwosu was recognized as CAA Field Athlete of the Week. 
 
WOMEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Cristal Cuervo, Towson
Junior | Sprints | Clayton, Panama City, Panama / Colegio Saint Mary
Cuervo opened the outdoor season with two event victories at the Towson Spring Opener, including a PR in the 100m. The junior won the 100m dash with a personal-best time of 11.69. It ranks first in the CAA, 19th in the NCAA East Region and 39th in the NCAA. In addition, she helped the Tigers to a victory in the 4x100m relay, running 45.25. The time sits 15th in the NCAA East Region and 23rd nationally this spring. 
 
WOMEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Courtney Lines, UNCW
Graduate | Jumps | Leland, N.C. / North Brunswick
Lines opened the spring in three jumps at the Seahawk Invitational, winning two events and recording a PR. The graduate student posted a league-leading mark in the long jump, winning the event with a leap of 5.94m (19-06.00), which ranks 28th in the NCAA this season. Additionally, Lines won the triple jump with a personal-best mark of 11.43m (37-06.00). Finally, she placed third in the high jump (1.55m). 
 
MEN’S TRACK ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
George Franks, Stony Brook
Freshman | Sprints | Mount Sinai, N.Y. / Mount Sinai 
Franks set Stony Brook program records in the 100m and 200m during his collegiate debut outdoors at the Stony Brook Snowflake Classic. The freshman ran 10.63 to win the 100m before posting a time of 21.39 to take first in the 200m. Both times are the fastest in the CAA this season and rank top-100 in the NCAA.  
 
MEN’S FIELD ATHLETE OF THE WEEK
Jason Nwosu, William & Mary
Sophomore | Throws | Franklinville, N.J. / Delsea Regional 
Nwosu earned three event victories and posted two league-leading marks at the Dan Stimson Memorial Meet. The sophomore won the shot put with a personal-best throw of 17.20m (56-05.25). It ranks first in the CAA, 14th in the NCAA East Region and 34th in the NCAA this season. He followed with a victory in the discus, recording a toss of 44.65m (146-06.00). Nwosu ended the season-opener by winning the hammer throw with a PR of 50.65m (166-02.00) - which is the top mark in the conference this spring.
