Five Repeat Winners Highlight CAA Women’s Lacrosse Major Awards
Miles McQuiggan
RICHMOND, Va. (May 1, 2024) – All five of the non-freshman major awards in CAA Women’s Lacrosse were repeat winners from a year ago, as recipients from Drexel, Stony Brook, and Delaware were joined by a selection from Elon to take home the league’s regular season hardware.
Drexel’s
Corinne Bednarik (Attacker of the Year) and
Jenika Cuocco (Goalkeeper of the Year), Stony Brook’s
Ellie Masera (Midfielder of the Year) and
Joe Spallina (Coach of the Year), and Delaware’s
Madison Hranicka (Defensive Player of the Year) are repeat award winners in 2024, while Elon’s
MJ Santa Barbara is the league’s Rookie of the Year this spring.
Bednarik ranks ninth in the nation with 5.38 points per game, third in the league and 33
rd in the country with 3.31 goals per game, fourth in the CAA and 34
th nationally with 2.06 assists per game, and eighth in the league with 4.00 draws per game for a Drexel team that boasts a top-20 RPI, and ranked wins over Penn State and Navy. Bednarik has been the recipient in both years of the award’s existence, as separate Attacker and Midfielder of the Year honors were split from the previous Player of the Year award before the 2023 season.
Masera has also taken both honors in the history of the CAA’s Midfielder of the Year award and does so in 2024 with stellar numbers throughout the stat sheet. The Tewaaraton nominee is second in the nation with 6.20 points per game, sixth with 4.20 goals per game, and ninth with 8.33 draws per game for No. 14 Stony Brook, which completed a second straight undefeated regular season since joining the CAA. Masera’s points per game average is on pace for second in a single season in league history with her goals per game average in position for third.
Hranicka was again one of the nation’s most disruptive defenders in 2024, ranking third nationally with 3.56 caused turnovers for Delaware. Her 57 caused turnovers in 2024 are good for second in a season in CAA history and her 140 in her Blue Hens career rank fourth in league history. Hranicka’s 11 caused turnovers vs. Lafayette are a CAA single-game record.
Cuocco followed a first season with Goalkeeper and Rookie of the Year honors by repeating as Goalkeeper of the Year in 2024. The Drexel goalie ranked second in the nation in save percentage (.573) and saves per game (11.56) and 11
th in goals-against average (8.74) for the 12-4 Dragons. Cuocco’s current save percentage is on pace to be the best by a CAA goalie since 2003.
Santa Barbara has rewritten the Elon and CAA record books in the draw circle in 2024. The freshman’s 145 total draws have already shattered the CAA single-season mark while her 9.06 draws per game are on pace to break the league’s record by over two-and-a-half per game. Santa Barbara broke Elon’s single-season mark in mid-March and ranks eighth nationally in draws per game.
Spallina eclipsed 200 wins on the Seawolves’ sideline this spring as part of a regular season that included wins over current top-25 opponents Syracuse, Stanford, and Rutgers. Stony Brook is seventh in the nation in scoring offense (16.06), fifth in defense (8.12), and third in margin (7.94) and holds a 15-2 record and RPI of 12 entering the CAA Championship. The accolade is the 10
th conference Coach of the Year honor in Spallina’s time as a collegiate head coach – two in the CAA and six in America East in his time at Stony Brook and two in the Northeast-10 while the coach at Adelphi.
