Stony Brook Rolls Past Niagara, Drexel Falls to Princeton in NCAA Women’s Lacrosse First Round

SYRACUSE N.Y./CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. (May 10, 2024) – Stony Brook cruised past Niagara on a record-setting day for Ellie Masera, while Drexel’s 2024 season came to a close on Friday.
 
No. 14 Stony Brook 19, Niagara 7
Ellie Masera tallied 10 points to break the CAA’s single-season points record with 114 as No. 14 Stony Brook advanced to the NCAA Second Round for the 11th consecutive tournament.
 
Masera notched six points and four assists to move her season points total past James Madison’s Gail Decker, who recorded 112 in 2004. Stony Brook (18-2) scored the game’s first five goals and led by as many as 15 in the contest. Five Seawolves posted multi-goal efforts in the victory, while Stony Brook recorded 11 caused turnovers off 18 miscues by Niagara (16-3) with three each from Jaden Hampel and Avery Hines.
 
Stony Brook advances to play No. 3 national seed Syracuse on Sunday at 2 p.m. on ESPN+. The Seawolves defeated the Orange in overtime on March 5 in Syracuse.
 
No. 18 Princeton 14, No. 22 Drexel 9
Drexel jumped out to an early lead but was outlasted by Princeton to conclude its fourth straight trip to the NCAA Tournament.
 
Anna Maria Gragnani scored three times for Drexel (13-6), which led 4-0 with Gragnani scoring two of the opening four goals. Princeton responded with the next four and was even 6-6 at the half before the Tigers scored all six goals in the third to take control.
 
Six Dragons scored in the contest, with Molly Weygand joining Gragnani with a multi-goal effort.
