ELON, N.C. (May 9, 2024) – After a long but exciting first day of the 2024 CAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships, the Monmouth men and Northeastern women
have the lead in the team race. The competition began just after 8 a.m. at Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex on the campus of Elon University, wrapping up just after 10:30 p.m.
For the second straight season, Monmouth leads in the men’s team race after day one, accumulating 55.5 points. The eight-time defending champs are in second as Northeastern tallied 48 points, just ahead of William & Mary with 45 points. UNCW (22), Stony Brook (21), Campbell (18.5), Hofstra (17), Hampton (3) and North Carolina A&T (3) round out the field.
The Northeastern women, who claimed its first-ever indoor team title in February, will look to outlast the three-time defending champions and win its first outdoor title since 2018. The Huskies lead with 47 points, followed closely by Elon, which scored 41 points, with William & Mary in third at 36.5 points. UNCW (21) and Charleston (19) round out the top five followed by Hampton (16), Campbell (14), Delaware (11), Hofstra (8), Stony Brook (8), Towson (6), Monmouth (5.5) and North Carolina A&T (1).
Five meet records fell on day one, including four by Campbell in the running prelims. The Camel quartet of Dominique Alexander (100), Brianna Clayton (200), Chastity Pickett (400mH) and Jaidyn Ramsey (100) will go for gold in their respective events after etching their names into the record books on Friday.
Men’s 10,000 Meters
The first meet record fell in the second event of the day as Hofstra’s Abraham Longosiwa claimed gold in the 10K with a winning time of 29:39.80. He became the first Hofstra runner to ever win the event, breaking the previous meet record – set in 2021 – by over 15 seconds. Evan Brennan of Stony Brook earned All-CAA honors for the second straight season, finishing runner-up in 30:39.11, followed by Hayes Trapp of William & Mary in third (30:52.93).
Women’s 10,000 Meters
The Phoenix got off to a great start on its home track, racking up 23 points in the first event, including five in the top eight of the 10K. Jette Beermann led the pack, becoming the third Elon runner to claim the crown in the past four seasons. Beermann crossed in 35:53.59 ahead of Stony Brook’s Fiona McLoughlin in second, running 35:55.39, and her teammate Katie Blount (35:58.51) rounding out the podium.
Women’s Hammer Throw
Hampton took first and third in the women’s hammer throw, with Oluwatomilayo Akintunde winning gold and Abria Smith taking bronze. Akintunde recorded a mark of 58.76m (192-09.25), Hope Belvit of Northeastern split the Lady Pirate duo in second, throwing 57.12m (187-04.75), and Smith tossed the implement 56.11m (184-01.00).
Man’s Javelin
William & Mary took two of the top three spots in the men’s javelin, as Chris Aris won his second CAA Title in the past three seasons. Aris won with a mark of 67.69m (222-00.75), followed by Miles Higgins from UNCW, throwing 66.84 (219-03.25), with Tribe teammate Raiden Lafortune taking third (63.33m).
Women’s Javelin
Jordyn Robbins launched a huge PR on her final attempt to become the first Seahawk to claim gold in the javelin since 2007. Robbins recorded a winning mark of 48.31m (158-05.75), surpassing her previous personal best by over four meters. William & Mary’s Liv finished in second (44.40m) followed by Towson’s Kira Parsons in third (40.26m) to round out the podium.
Men’s Hammer Throw
Nicholas Pisciotta of Northeastern won the hammer throw for the third straight season, becoming the first male to three-peat in the event since former Husky Max Milder from 2012-14. Pisciotta recorded a personal-best mark of 64.28m (210-10.50) to win, followed by his teammate Tremain Robinson in second (57.64m). Monmouth’s Isaiah Battle finished third (57.14m) to claim All-CAA honors.
Women’s Long Jump
Dominique Biron of Northeastern had won six CAA titles in her career before competition today, but never the long jump. She added the honor to her ledger this afternoon, winning the event on her final attempt after five All-CAA finishes in the long jump throughout her career. Biron popped a 6.21m (w) (20-04.25), knocking off the two-time defending champion Courtney Lines from UNCW, who leaped 6.17m (20-02.75) to place second. Destiny Bailey-Perkins from Campbell rounded out the podium in third (5.97m).
Men’s Long Jump
A nearly 90-minute weather delay could not dampen the men's long jump competition, arguably the most exciting event of day one. All three podium finishers recorded lifetime best marks on their final attempt. After falling into third, Bryson Robinson popped a massive leap of 7.89m (w) (25-10.50) to claim gold, recording the best mark at the Championship since 2001. The jump ranks 16th in the NCAA in all conditions this spring. C.J. McBride leaped into first on the jump prior and took second with his leap of 7.57m (w) (24-10.00), after Ahmad Brock started the trend by jumping 7.49m (24-06.75) – the best wind-legal mark in the conference this season.
Women’s Pole Vault
Luzy Lieger repeated as women’s pole vault champion as Charleston placed two on the podium in the event. Lieger cleared 3.90m (12-09.50) to win the event, followed by Campbell’s Lakelyn Bass, who edged her Cougar teammate, Madison Jent on misses. Both Bass and Jent cleared 3.85m (12-05.50) on Friday.
Women’s 3000 Steeplechase
Azza Borovicka-Swanson was the second straight runner from Northeastern to claim the CAA title in the women’s 3000m steeplechase. The senior ran the second-fastest time in championship history, winning the event in 10:13.52. Hofstra’s Jordyn McDonell improved on her third-place finish last year, running 10:20.87 to place second. Elon’s Hannah Miller rounded out the podium, finishing at 10:22.51.
Men’s 3000 Steeplechase
Alexander Korczynski became the first runner in conference history to win the men’s 3000m steeplechase four times. The Northeastern senior – who redshirted last outdoor season – returned to make history, winning gold with a time of 8:51.71. Stony Brook’s Carlos Santos placed second in 8:55.79, followed by another Husky, Patrick Mullen(8:58.56) in third.
Men’s Pole Vault
Jan Volkmar made it back-to-back pole vault titles for Monmouth in the final event of day one. Volkmar cleared 4.65m (15-03.00) edging William & Mary’s John Mintz, Campbell’s Reagan Wise and his teammate Connor Bennett, who cleared 4.55m (14-11.00).
