Northeastern Extends Conference Record with Ninth Consecutive Men’s CAA Outdoor Track & Field Title

 ELON, N.C. (May 11, 2024) – Northeastern extended its conference record for consecutive Men’s CAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships to nine in a row on Saturday at Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex on the campus of Elon University.
 
The Huskies narrowly edged Campbell in a tight race among the top four. Northeastern totaled 140.5 points ahead of the Camels with 137.5. Monmouth scored 127.5 points in third, with North Carolina A&T rounding out the top four at 126. William & Mary was fifth (95), followed by UNCW (70.5), Stony Brook (52), Hampton (41) and Hofstra (17).  


 
Campbell’s C.J. McBride was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer after recording 28 points across three events – the most by a student-athlete at the Championship. McBride won the triple jump and high jump, setting a meet record in the latter after a second-place finish in the long jump.
 
His Camel teammate Jamel Miller shined in the running events and was named Most Outstanding Track Performer. Miler tallied 25 points, winning four gold medals and setting three meet records. 
 
Men’s 4x100m Relay
There were fireworks in the men’s first event of the day, as Campbell ran away with the 4x100m relay, breaking the meet and conference records. The team of Jamel MillerDominique AlexanderDe’Shawn Ballard and Jamal Miller ran the seventh fastest time in the NCAA this spring, running 38.80 to win gold. Hampton finished runner-up (40.56), followed by Monmouth (40.98). 
 
Men’s Shot Put
Jason Nwosu went back-to-back in the men’s shot put, giving William & Mary four of the past five titles in the event. He won with a mark of 17.00m (55-09.25) ahead of two Aggies in second and third. Teammates Carlos Alexander (16.92m) and Brayden Hodgest(16.58m) finished second and third, respectively. 
 
Men’s Triple Jump
Campbell’s C.J. McBride leaped a season-best 15.59m (51-01.75) to claim the outdoor title in the triple after his indoor title in February. It was the best jump at the Championship since 2006. Xaiver Partee of North Carolina A&T placed second (14.88m), edging UNCW’s Ivan Poag in third (14.86m) by two centimeters. 
 
Men’s 1500 Meters
Stony Brook’s Collin Gilstrap had the best kick in the men’s 1500m, running 3:44.33 to win gold in the eventPatrick Cantlonof Northeastern was second in 3:47.81 ahead of William & Mary’s Jacob Jones, rounding out the podium with a time of 3:48.47. 
 
Men’s 110m Hurdles
Jason Holmes – the CAA 60m hurdle champion and an All-American indoors – broke a 21-year-old in the 110m hurdles to win gold. The freshman ran 13.48 into a -1.0 headwind to reset the meet record, previously established by JMU’s Jerry Rooney in 1993. UNCW’s Josh Parks finished runner-up for the second straight year, posting a time of 13.76, and Thomas Smith of A&T was third (13.85).
Men’s 400 Meters
Campbell’s Jamel Miller took gold in the men’s 400m, running the fastest time at the Championship since 2013. Miller won in 45.63, outlasting the 2024 CAA Indoor 400m Champion, George Franks of Stony Brook, who ran a personal-best 45.88. Hampton’s Antoine Spencer was third in 46.59.
 
Men’s 100 Meters
Campbell went 1-2 in the 100m dash as Jamal Miller outleaned his teammate, Dominique Alexander, at the tape. Miller ran 10.35, and Alexander, who broke the meet record in the prelims (10.22), was 10.36. Noah Sweeney, the defending champion in the event, earned an All-CAA finish in third (10.58). 
 
Men’s 800 Meters
Dugion Blackman went back-to-back in the men’s 800, breaking the meet record in 2024 with his time of 1:46.67. Blackman led wire-to-wire, posting the 15th-best time in the NCAA this spring. Northeastern placed second and third in the event as Kerem Ayhan, the 2024 Indoor Champion in the event, ran 1:47.52, and Reed Cherry crossed in 1:48.91. 
 
Men’s 400m Hurdles
Aveon Reid was shot out of a canon in the 400m hurdles and held off the two-time defending champion to give North Carolina A&T gold in both hurdles. Reid ran a personal-best time of 50.27 to win – a time that ranks 19th in the NCAA this season. Josh Parks of UNCW also ran a season-best time, crossing in 50.49 to take second, and A&T’s Isaiah Taylor was third, finishing in 51.30. 
 
Men’s 200 Meters
Jamel Miller broke his second meet record and earned his third gold medal in the men’s 200m dash. Campbell went 1-2, with Miller crossing in 20.49, and Dominique Alexanderwho was second in the 100, finished runner-up in 20.83. Jason Holmes of North Carolina A&T was third, running 20.89. 
 
Men’s High Jump
C.J. McBride won his second gold medal of the day in the high jump, setting the meet record with a clearance of 2.19m (7-02.00). His season-best mark ranks 13th in the nation this spring. McBride was followed on the podium by North Carolina A&T’s Kendrell Goodes (2.08m) and his teammate Kaleb Johnson (2.04m). 
 
Men’s Discus
The same podium finishers from the shot put were on the podium in the discus; however, A&T went 1-2, with Brayden Hodgest claiming the conference title with a throw of 50.68m (166-03.25). Carlos Alexander followed, throwing 49.83m (163-05.75), and Jason Nwosu rounded out the top three with a toss of 49.04m (160-10.50).
 
Decathlon  
Monmouth’s Jan Volkmar established a new meet record in the decathlon as the Hawks went 1-2 in the event. Volkmar tallied a score of 6,945 points across 10 events, followed by his teammate David Strong, who posted a score of 6,706 points. Brian Walsh – the Indoor Heptathlon Champion – of William & Mary finished third with 6,631 points. 
 
Men’s 5000 Meters
Northeastern came up huge in the 5K, placing first, second, fourth and fifth for 27 team points. Ben Godish claimed the crown for the second straight season in 14:39.62. Alexander Korczynski was runner-up (14:40.40), earning his second All-CAA finish of the meet. Carlos Santosprevent ed the Huskies sweep by taking third in 14:42.22. 
 
Men’s 4x400m Relay 
Campbell finished the day the same way they started, with a new meet record in the 4x400m relay. The Camels squad of De’Shawn BallardGlenn SkinnerJamal Miller and his brother Jamel posted a season-best time of 3:06.40 to break the previous championship record. Northeastern finished second (3:09.89), and North Carolina A&T rounded out the podium (3:11.98).
