Northeastern Wins Third CAA Women’s Outdoor Track & Field Championship

ELON, N.C. (May 11, 2024) – Northeastern won its third CAA Women’s Outdoor Track and Field team title in program history Saturday at Jerry and Jeanne Robertson Track and Field Complex on the campus of Elon University.
The Huskies scored 128.5 points to knock off the three-time defending Champions, Elon
on their home track. The Phoenix finished runner-up with 111 points ahead of Hampton in third with 105. Campbell (92) and Towson (78) rounded out the top five, followed by William & Mary (60.5), North Carolina A&T (54), Monmouth (53.5), Delaware (44), UNCW (36), Stony Brook (24), Charleston (23.5) and Hofstra (8).
Campbell’s
Jaidyn Ramsey was named the Most Outstanding Track Performer after winning three gold medals, setting two meet records and helping the Camels to the all-time record in the 4x100m relay. Ramsey totaled 23.25 points – the most by any student-athlete in the competition.
Dominique Biron was named the Most Outstanding Field Performer, scoring
a team-high 22 points to lead the Huskies to their first team title since 2018. Biron tallied 18 points in the field after winning the long jump and finishing second in the heptathlon.
Women’s 4x100m Relay
Campbell opened running events by breaking the meet and conference record in the 4x100m relay, running a blazing 44.42 with
the team of Jaidyn Ramsey,
Brianna Clayton,
Aaliyah Brown Muhammad, and
Aaliyah Harris.
North Carolina A&T finished second in 44.71 also surpassing the previous meet record, and Elon was third, crossing in 45.95.
Women’s Shot Put
In the first event of the day, Hampton scored 22 points in the women’s shot put, taking first, third, fourth and eighth place
in the event. Abria Smith won gold for the Lady Pirates, recording a season-best mark of 15.55m (51-00.00), and
Nya Harmon took bronze with a throw of 14.39m (47-02.50). Towson’s
Fatimah Owens split the Hampton duo in second with a mark of 14.63m (47-11.75).
Heptathlon
Northeastern went 1-2 in the heptathlon.
Kennedee Cox took the title with a personal-best effort of 5,048 points, recording lifetime best marks in the 100m hurdles, 200m and 800m.
Dominique Biron – a three-time champion in the event – battled back to finish runner-up
in the event, scoring 5,009 points despite a no-height in the high jump. Delaware’s Alicia Lehman also set a PR, accumulating 4,952 points to round out the podium.
Women’s 1500 Meters
Abigail Hassman became the first Husky in program history to win the women’s 1500m at the CAA Championship as Northeastern went 1-2
in the event. Hassman won in 4:24.43, followed by her teammate Ava Duggan, running 4:26.72. Elon’s
Anna Twomey earned All-CAA honors with a third-place finish, crossing in 4:28.04.
Women’s 100m Hurdles
Lucheyona Weaver continued the hurdle legacy for North Carolina A&T, becoming the second straight Aggie to win the 100m hurdles. She posted a winning time of 13.28. Monmouth’s
Yasmeen Tinsley was the runner-up with a personal-best time of 13.59, edging Campbell’s
Chastity Pickett in third, crossing in 13.62.
Women’s High Jump
Monmouth’s
Veronica Chainov claimed the high jump title outdoors as she did indoors. The junior cleared 1.80m (5-10.76), the best winning height at the championship since 2018. Hampton’s
Emmani Shaw finished runner-up ahead of
My’Khiyah Williams of North Carolina A&T on fewer misses. The duo cleared 1.73m (5-08.00) on Saturday morning.
Women’s 400 Meters
Piper Jons shot off the final turn to come from behind and win the women’s 400m with a personal-best time of 53.10. She becomes the first Elon runner in program history to win gold at the conference championship.
Cristal Cuervo of Towson finished in second, crossing in 53.33, just ahead of Delaware’s
Halima Scott, running 53.38.
Women’s 100 Meters
Jaidyn Ramsey of Campbell pulled away from the field in the women’s 100m dash, establishing herself as the fastest woman in league history, running 11.26 to win the title. She reset the meet record for the second straight day and broke the conference record set in 2007. Pebbles Scott of North Carolina A&T finished second in 11.53, edging Towson’s
Maya Tucker at the line (11.57).
Women’s Triple Jump
Manie Mevo recorded a season-best jump of 12.67m (41-06.75) to defend her
title in the women’s triple jump after becoming the first Towson student-athlete to win gold in the event last season. William & Mary’s Megan Heidebrecht was second, leaping 12.59m (41-03.50) ahead of Delaware’s
Jahnia Hodge in third (12.35m).
Women’s 800 Meters
Fajr Kelly of North Carolina A&T ran the fastest 800m time in the conference this season to claim the title in the event at the league championships. She became the first Aggies to win the title, posting a winning time
of 2:06.72. Ava Duggan finished second in 2:08.53 ahead of Delaware’s
Kadence Dumas, earning a podium finish in 2:08.90.
Women’s Discus
Hampton’s
Damali Williams recorded the second farthest throw in CAA Championship history, launching a personal-best 56.03m (183-09.75) to win the event. Towson’s
Fatimah Owens earned her second All-CAA finish of the weekend, finishing runner-up with a mark of 52.25m (171-05.00). Elon’s
Kaitlin McGoogan rounded out the podium in third, throwing 51.33m (168-04.75).
Women’s 400m Hurdles
Campbell’s
Chastity Pickett reset the meet record in the 400m hurdles for the second straight day, running 55.88 to win gold
in the event. Monmouth’s Yasmeen Tinsley finished runner-up in her second hurdle event
of the day, crossing in 57.91. Last season’s CAA Champ, Dejah Grant from
Hampton was third in 59.81.
Women’s 200 Meters
Jaidyn Ramsey doubled back to win the women’s 200m, setting her third meet record of the competition with a winning time of 23.28. Campbell went 1-2 in the event, with
Brianna Clayton finishing second in 23.44. Towson’s
Maya Tucker rounded out the podium, ending her teammate by 0.001 seconds in third (23.61).
Women’s 5000 Meters
It was a photo finish in the longest event of the day as Elon’s
Jette Beermann chased down Hampton’s
Peninah Mutisya in the final 100m to win her second gold medal in as many days. Beermann doubled back after the 10K yesterday, running 16:12.98, edging Mutisya in second at 16:13.07.
Abigail Hassman of Northeastern earned her second All-CAA finish of the day in third (16:15.27).
Women’s 4x400m Relay
UNCW concluded the competition with a victory in the 4x400m relay as the team of
Janiyah Fields,
Nasiah Ferguson,
Avery Rueckert, and
Mackenzie Townsend posted a season-best time of 3:40.86. Northeastern secured the team title with a second-place finish (3:41.81), followed by Towson in third (3:42.10).
