PENNSAUKEN, N.J. (May 16, 2024) – The CAA Rowing Championship returns to the Cooper River in Pennsauken, N.J., after a one-year absence with a new format in 2024. The competition features a full complement of eight teams and will be contested over two days – Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18.

Friday consists of heats to qualify for Saturday’s finals. Championship Saturday begins at 9:30 a.m. with the non-scoring Grand Final of the Third Varsity Eight. The Varsity Four Grand Final follows at 9:50 a.m., with the Second Varsity Eight Grand Final at 10:10 a.m. The competition culminates with the Varsity Eight Grand Final at 10:30 a.m. Petite Finals precede each Grand Final.

It marks the second straight season eight teams will compete at the Championship; however, Monmouth is in the V8, 2V8 and V4 for the first time in program history. The rest of the field remains the same as the previous three seasons – UConn, Delaware, Drexel, Eastern Michigan, Northeastern, UCSD and Villanova.

The nine-time defending champions, Northeastern, will be the favorite to extend its streak to double-digits. The Huskies are the only team ranked regionally in the NCAA at No. 1 in Region 2. The Northeastern V8 is ranked first in the region, while its 2V8 and V4 are ranked second. Last season, the Huskies became the first program since 2017 to win all three races at the conference championship en route to their 12th league title in 14 attempts.

Drexel is still looking to break through for its first CAA Rowing title in program history, led by first-year head coach Katie Lane. The Dragons have finished runner-up in eight straight seasons. Drexel is the only other team in the conference with a boat ranked regionally in the NCAA, as its V4 is fifth in the NCAA Region 2.

Delaware also has new leadership after hiring Asiya Mahmud. She is no stranger to the CAA, spending eight seasons on the coaching staff of her alma mater, Drexel. Delaware placed third last spring – its second top-three finish in the past three seasons.

Eastern Michigan returns for its 11th CAA Championship, earning three top-three finishes in program history, while Villanova is back for the eighth time, placing in the top three on one occasion. In addition, UConn and UCSD will make their fourth straight appearance at the Championship.
