INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (May 16, 2024) – Seventy-two CAA student-athletes were announced as individual qualifiers for the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field East Preliminary by
the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field and Cross Country committee on Thursday, and Northeastern senior multi Dominique Biron was an automatic qualifier for the 2024 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championship in the heptathlon.
Biron posted a lifetime-best mark of 5,699 points in the heptathlon on April 12 – the 17th-best score in the NCAA this season – to punch her ticket to Historic Hayward Field in June. The senior becomes just the fifth combined events student-athlete to qualify for the NCAA Championships in conference history and the first since 2007.
The regional qualifiers include 38 women from 12 institutions and 34 men from all eight programs, surpassing the mark of 53 set last season. In addition, multiple relay teams made the cut for the second straight season, including the Campbell men’s 4x1 and 4x4, along with the Hampton women’s 4x4.
On the women’s side, Hampton led the way with the most individual qualifiers for the second straight season. The Lady Pirates will have nine women competing in six events, including their relay team. Elon followed with five individual qualifiers, while Campbell, Northeastern and Towson had four. In total, 11 conference teams had multiple women’s qualifiers, and six student-athletes will compete in two events.
For the men, UNCW and Northeastern each had six individual qualifiers across five events, while Campbell and North Carolina A&T had five. All A&T’s qualifiers came in the hurdles, with three entries in the 110s and three in the 400s. Campbell has three student-athletes competing in three events – including De’Shawn Ballard (400m/4x100m Relay/4x400m Relay), Jamal Miller (100m/4x100m Relay/4x400m Relay) and
Jamel Miller (400m/4x100m Relay/4x400m Relay) – and eight men across the conference will compete in multiple events.
The NCAA preliminary meets are from Wednesday, May 22, to Saturday, May 25, in Lexington, Ky. (East) and Fayetteville, Ark. (West). The top 12 performers from each region will advance to the NCAA Division I Men’s and Women’s Outdoor Track and Field Championships from June 5-8 in Eugene, Ore., at Historic Hayward Field.
