William & Mary Cruises Past Hofstra To Stay Alive In CAA Baseball Championship

WILMINGTON, N.C. (May 24, 2024) – Fifth-seeded William & Mary stayed alive in the CAA Baseball Championship, cruising past #6 Hofstra, 16-6, in an elimination game on Friday afternoon at UNCW’s Brooks Field.
The Tribe (32-25) will immediately return to action, facing #4 Delaware in another elimination contest at 4 p.m. Hofstra’s season came to an end with a 24-33 record.
Joe Delossantos and Anthony Greco both had three hits and two RBI’s to lead the W&M offense. Luca Trigiani and Christian Rush also drove in a pair of runs and Trey Christman added a three-run homer.
For Hofstra, Steve Harrington was 2-for-4 with a two-run homer and Will Kennedy was 2-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.
Reliever Travis Garnett improved to 5-0 after working 2.1 innings and fanning four. Reed Interdonato followed by limiting the Pride to one hit over the final 3.2 frames to earn his second save.
Both teams wasted no time getting their offenses started. In the top of the first, Hofstra’s Dylan Palmer and Alex McCoy drew walks, and a double steal allowed Palmer to score. Harrington followed with a homer to left to put the Pride on top, 3-0. William & Mary responded quickly in the bottom half of the frame. After loading the bases with one out, the Tribe plated runs on a Rush walk, a fielder’s choice and a Trigiani RBI single to even the score at 3-3.
Hofstra moved ahead in the top of the fourth as Michael Florides reached on a bunt single and later scored on a wild pitch, but the lead would not last long. The Tribe answered with five runs on only two hits in the bottom of the fourth, taking advantage of six walks, a hit batter and a wild pitch. W&M got an RBI double from Ben Parker and a run-scoring single from Greco in the frame.
The Tribe tacked on another run in the fifth and then blew the game open with a six-run seventh. Delossantos provided a two-RBI single to start the big inning before Christman capped it with a three-run homer to left that made it 15-5.
