The William & Mary women’s tennis team and the UNCW men’s tennis team saw their seasons come to an end following setbacks in the first round of the NCAA Tennis Championship on Friday.

The Tribe fell 4-0 to No. 29 Wisconsin, ending its 14-match winning streak, while the Seahawks were beaten 4-0 by No. 14 NC State, snapping a 12-match winning streak.

In doubles, W&M’s No. 3 tandem of Francesca Davis and Mila Mejic held a 6-5 lead, but the match was abandoned after the Tribe’s No. 1 duo of Emma Fernald and Yu Chen were edged 6-4 by the Badgers’ 40th-ranked team of Maria Sholokhova and Alina Mukhortova.

In singles, Sholokhova (No. 1), who is ranked No. 82 nationally, Mukhortova (No. 3) and Xinyu Cai (No. 4) secured Wisconsin's passage to the next round with victories at three of the top four positions.

The Seahawks gave NC State all it could handle in doubles. After losing at No. 1, UNCW’s No. 3 team of Gabe Hurtado and Trey Mallory defeated Fons Van Sambeek and Braden Shick, 7-5. The point was decided in a tiebreaker at No. 2, as UNCW’s Bek Rasamatov and Drew Broadstreet were edged, 7-6 (5).

In singles, UNCW’s Harold Huens was leading 54th-ranked Robin Catry, 6-4, 4-3 at No. 1 and Gabe Hurtado took the opening set from 72nd-ranked Van Sambeek at No. 4, but NCSU closed out the match with victories at No. 3, No. 5 and No. 6.
